Switch from Zalman to [Xigmatek] HDT S1283

Post by sandman7777 » Fri Jun 06, 2008 5:52 pm

First thing out of the box and check for straight and level heat sink mounting surface find that is is off by quite a bit on the one side so i am forced to do some lapping which came out rather good. So it pays to check even if it look good out of the box more to come after install

well had to lap the cpu also and I have gained a 4c cooler temp at idle and about 5c at full load over the Zalman but it might have something to do with the cpu having a bump on the mating surface we will never no i like the new cooler so far and is quit and hooked to the motherboard header. i also used the mounting backplate from the Zalman with some mods and so far the mobo is running cooler also will have to see what final temps are after the AS5 cures.

Hey. Any issues with lapping this heatsink; with the copper and aluminum base? It's a great heatsink, but I wasn't thrilled with the machining of the unit I received; been playing with the idea of lapping it. Thanks.

none that I had, but I would not of lapped, but lying a straight edge across the surface i found that the one side was off just a little bit compared to the right side.

i have been thinking about lapping mine too, what grit did you use, as like everyone else, i am abit concerned about the heat pipes.

i think just smoothing the surface with a finer grit will do, but if i find that it is uneven, then il have to sand it down first.

how did you lap yours? and did you lap the cpu aswell.

Lapped both, started with 800 than 1500 then 2000 grit and that was all there was to it. I tapped the wet paper to a piece of plate glass and did it with water and a little dish soap for the heat sink. Then I put the black protective cover back on the pin side of the cpu and , than started the masking tape on the very otter lip of the top side of the cpu, and flipped it around to cover the pin side and the black protective cover for added protection of grit getting n the pins. Did the same procedure being very careful with as little water as possible and wipes a lot of times to keep any excess water of the cpu. Here is the X-1283 bottom.
