What cooler for AMD 4850e 45w?

Post by Audiophiliac » Mon Oct 13, 2008 6:01 pm

I am getting ready to replace mobo/CPU/RAM in the tower and would like some opinions on coolers for the CPU. Case is a Silverstone TJ04. I am running Nexus 120 fans front and rear and the corsair HX PSU has a 120 as well.

I am looking at HR-01, Mini Ninja, Nexus HC9000, etc. Noise is the top priority. No OC here. Just want it quiet and cool. Passive would be ideal, but I am not against running say a 92 or 120 at 5v or so to get some air moving around.

Thanks in advance.

I always use Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 HSFs now.
The fan is rubber mounted, is inaudible (to me)
and can be pointed at the rear case exhaust fan.

Better yet, they are very inexpensive!

i've heard good things about the Arctic Freezer actually...

but i will say the Mini Ninja gives the potential of a semi-passive system, with maybe only an exhaust fan, pending other components. HR-01 is pretty tall, and if you're dealing with such little heat, what's the point of such a large tower.

I m cooling my 4050e passively with a Xigmatek S-1283. The CPU idle temp (according to Asus) is 2-3C over ambient room temp.

I do have the Antec Mini P180 with top case Tri-Cool 200mm fan nearby (set on low speed), but no fan on the HS itself.

The S-1283 has a unique design so that the heatpipes come in direct contact with the CPU.

Seconded.

I use fancontrol to run my S-1283 passive 'normally', which is CnQ engaged (1000MHz), Folding 24/7. CPU temp is circa 18C above (room) ambient and I have a single 120mm fan in the PSU @ 8V shifting air through the case (& PSU). Drawing 70W at the wall. Was hoping to get the Sunbeam HDT because it would orientate so exhaust is towards rear of case as opposed to S-1283 which blows up to PSU, but with passive option am content with S-1283 orientation. If I override CnQ the CPU temp rises to about 28C over ambient and fancontrol lifts the CPU fan to about 320rpm to stabilise the temp there (as before CPU load is Folding.)

I have a AM2 4200+ cooled passively with a mini ninja.

Only have a 120mm Nexus exhaust running at 500rpm, and the fan in my Seasonic PSU.

It is undervolted to 1.0V and runs at about 36C idle. 50C load.

I like the Sunbeam. I plan to try running just the 120 front intake fan and the 120 PSU exhaust. Not sure if an upward facing passive would work more effectively than a rear facing passive. I could also run a 120 exhaust at low speed too.....decisions, decisions.

I use the Xigmatek S1284 4 heatpipe version of the S1283 and that works pretty well for me. I'm running passive with one Scythe 120mm case fan and it's at around 35C idle.

I think I would like one that I can mount either direction. I see the Noctua NH-U12P can be mounted in either orientation. I think the 1284EE might too....any others that give you the choice?

I am running my 4850e (for now, while performing various testing) @3GHz...Heatsink is a Scythe Ninja 2 with Arctic Ceramique applied...
Although the Slipstream fan supplied runs @ 1050rpm, idle temp is 32C (25C ambient) and during stress (Everest Stability Test) it reaches 48C...

I thing that temps are really good, if you consider that mobo is vcore-moded and runs the 4850e @ 1.46V...When using C'n'Q (to enable it i had to lower the HT to 236)frequency drops @ 1180 and voltage @ ~1.05...Then, when idling, temp reaches as low as 29...
I believe that the Ninja mini will give you very low temps, if we consider that my 4850e runs overclocked @ overvolted and that the Ninja 2 keeps it cool...In stock freq & voltage the mini will be performing quite good...
