Exactly which bolt-thru kit for Scythe Mini Ninja?

Post by pelago » Tue Apr 14, 2009 4:17 am

I have a Scythe Mini Ninja for Socket 775 (specifically, http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=657369). Although I had read previously how bad push pins were, I didn't quite believe it until the HSF fell off within a couple of days of putting it on!

So, I require a bolt-thru kit, I believe, even though that means removing the motherboard. Reading here I see the one made by Scythe is not well-regarded, whereas the ones by Thermalright and Xigmatek (Crossbow) are better.

But I can't work out exactly which kit I should get. For Xigmatek, I see ACK-I7753, ACK-I7361 and ACK-I7363 for example, all of which will fit Socket 775 but which are designed for different Xigmatek HSFs.

Does anyone know exactly which kit is best for my HSF? Thanks in advance.

I know for a fact THIS will work. I am using it with a Ninja2.

Also, with the original Ninja and Ninja Mini, the Thermalright will work just fine too.

Hope this helps.

The Thermalright one is a popular choice.

Just know that the Xigmatek is more functional as you can use a small (supplied) wrench with it. This is good for coolers that don't allow you to get to it from the top with a screw driver. It's not a problem with the Minja, but you could always upgrade.

Understood. The only problem is I can't find the ACK-I7751 from my usual supplier - http://www.scan.co.uk/. They have ACK-I7753 though - will that work? They also have ACK-I7361 and ACK-I7363.

They should all work. The 7361 and 7363 can be used on both LGA 775 and 1366. The 7753 looks similar to the 7751 that I'm using, although it's more expensive for some reason. Just looking at photos, the 7361/3 seem like they could be a better design than the 7751/3.

I think that there are different models because they come supplied with different retention brackets for the various Xigmatek heatsinks. You won't be using these, so it shouldn't matter which one you choose. You will need to remove the screws from the retention brackets, this might not be ncessary with the 7361/3 if the photos I'm looking at are correct. On the 7751 the screws are are held on pretty tightly by small clips. I used a screwdriver to lever the clips off. You will only be using the backplate and the four screws with springs. The holes in the backplate are threaded and the screws go into that. Some pics of the 7753. Although this one is in Japanese, you get the idea. You can see that they've discarded the retention brackets to use the kit with a different heatsink.

I recently bolted my Thermalright HR-01 down with four bolts, four nuts and eight spring washers I bought from my local hardware store for about five dollars. You just need to get the right diameter bolts and not too long. So far so good.

Thanks, now I understand better. In that case I'll try one of the Xigmatek I7361 or I7363 models, just in case I ever want to use it with a Socket 1366 in future, and so that I can use a wrench to tighten the screws if necessary with different HSFs.

I don't think any of these will work with the socket 1366. The new CPU is just a bigger piece.

On the otherhand, you can always keep the screws from this kit to use later (w/ the wrench).

I hate the Scythe kit. One of my screws/bolts wasn't thread correctly, so I couldn't attach one corner of the heatsink tightly. I emailed Scythe to ask for a replace ment screw/bolt set for just 1 corner, meaning 1 screw, and 1 each of the supporting bolts. Well, there response was that they didn't have any extras and that I needed to buy a new one....

So I got a new heatsink from another company. If anyone wants a bare mini ninja with no pushpins and in need of a bolt through kit, let me know.
