I quick google search yields various results, so I'll ask here:
I would like to build a core 2 quad (q9400 processor) PC in an Antec Solo case. I would place 2 92 mm case fans in front, and either leave the included 120 mm exhaust Tri-Cool fan on Low, or replace it with a Scythe or Nexus fan. I would place a GTS 250 video card in there, too.
I am trying to decide on the CPU cooler. I like the Noctua U12P, and the Scythe Mugen 2, but both seem pretty big for this case. Would the Scythe Shuriken (SCSK-1100) be strong enough to cool this CPU at load? I would not be overclocking it.
I welcome your advice.
Thanks,
Steve
Scythe Shuriken good enough for Core 2 Quad?

Hi, I recently swapped my E6600 (Core 2 Duo, 2.4GHz, 4MB cache) for Q9400 (Quad, 2.66GHz, 6MB cache). I expected the 45nm vs 65nm to help the cooling but I was shocked to find it's probably easier to cool than the E6600 was. Infact I think that with the Q9400@ 8x400= 3.2Ghz it takes similar cooling to the E6600 at similar or lower clock speed.
In short I think the Shuriken should be fine, you may find a bit of under-volting will help keep the temps/fan speeds down.
(Under-volting is reducing the CPU Vcore while leaving the clock speeds at stock so performance isn't affected. Finding the minimum voltage can take a little work but due to the relationship between Vcore and power even a 5% reduction in Vcore should be ~10% drop in power/heat/temps.)
