Was thinking about getting a new CPU heatsink and fan...

Post by thepwner » Sun Jun 07, 2009 9:19 am

OK so right now I have a 4850e but was thinking in the future upgrading to a dual core Kuma and OC'ing a bit and I don't think my Arctic Cooling 64 Freezer Pro is going to cut it, so I want to maybe get a new heatsink. Any suggestions? I was looking at this Xigmatek

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835233003

But I was just looking at it...don't have my heart set on it, as for the Xigmatek, I don't know if that stock fan would fly, so what fan would you reccomend for it? Maybe a noctua or an s-flex?

Thanks

Really? I give you guys the chance to reccomend a new heatsink...seems like you would be all over that with 1000 suggestions...guess I was mistaken.

There is a very nice "Recommended CPU coolers" list on this very site. Why not consult that?

Personally I see no need for you to switch cooler simply for the sake of performance.

I agree with Olle on not needing to upgrade the HSF if "OC'ing a bit" really means what it means. That Arctic Cooling should be enough as long as you don't go overboard with the voltages and you have proper case airflow.
I'd also check out other reviewers (Mad Shrimps, X-bit Labs, Frostytech) in addition to SPCR if I were you.

AC 64 Pro is rated 130W heat dispassation, while at stock Kuma's are 95W TDP. OC'ing slightly and you still got plenty head room.

Right, it's rated at 130W heat dissapation...but that's (probably) with the fan at the stock 12v which is actually extremely loud. ~1000rpm it becomes very quiet/inaudible. And here's the thing guys, I live in a house without air conditioning, so with summer coming it's going to get quite hot...like whatever the temperature is outside...that's pretty much what it's going to be like inside my house...maybe 90F or hotter on some days...so with the ambient temperature of the CPU while the PC is off maybe being around 90F, the CPU could get pretty hot if I want to keep the fan speed at a minimum.

It's nice to play with the thought of a new cooler, though I'd suggest you simply try the current AC with the upcoming CPU and see whats happening. You can always swap cooler later

Nothing to do with silent, but if you do get the S1283, get the backplate kit as well. Crossbow ACK-I7751. Makes for a much better mount.
