Best CPU cooler for Solo?

Post by Wilhelm-Tell » Thu Sep 17, 2009 5:53 am

As you can see I don't have much room left at the top before the sink hits the PSU. What should I go for, Ninja-mini? Noctua NH-U9B?

In the Solo most/all of the big tower heatsinks fit, unless you motherboard is entirely freaky in the positioning of the CPU. The full Ninja and Xigmatek 1283 are two I've put in Solo/P150 builds for myself or friends.

Or am I missing something?

It's just that the CPU-slot is placed very high up on my motherboard. But maybe you are right, a full Ninja or Xigmatek 1283 might fit. It just would be good to know for sure.

that was an important thing for me too, as my case is a bit shallow, and somewhat short for an ATX case (Cooler Master Elite 330). That picture is one I took measuring from approximately the center of the CPU heatsink all the way to the top of the motherboard, showing about the widest part of a Scythe Ninja. This was my deciding factor in jumping on one, and to my surprise, it did fit, with more room to spare than I originally though.

I hope that helps you as much as it helped me.

I wonder if Mugen 2 would fit with EX38-DS4 (has similar CPU placing as your ASRock board) + Solo combo

Measure the distance between the mounting holes for the cooler, center to center. Find the mid-point. Measure from the mid-point to the PSU. Multiply that distance by two and you get the maximum dimension for your heatsink in that direction, or quite close to it.

Brilliant. I now know that a Ninja will fit.

Great.

What about height

Post by greencurve » Wed Sep 23, 2009 8:59 am

I agree that the complete Ninja would fit its two dimensional measurements.

But, I came up with viewtopic.php?t=52931&highlight=solo

The height is a problem.

hypnos's trick is like this:
The top fin is touching. I could bend the top couple of fins in one corner down a mm or 2 or I could bend the case support out of the way.

The Ninja fit for me (both a P5B-E and current EP45-UD3P mobo). If yours is of the push-pin variety, be sure to get the Thermalright bolt-thru kit (back plate) for better thermal response.

I have a Solo with a Gigabyte EP-45-UD3R. The Scythe Mugen 2 fits as long as it's oriented so the fan blows toward the back of the case. HTH

I also have found that a Mugen 2 can fit inside a Solo case, but I am using a different motherboard than you are. As an earlier poster said, the best thing is to measure and check. The forums on the German Scythe website have some nicely dimensioned pictures of each of their heatsinks. I'm sorry that I don't have the URL handy.

You can see my system here:

I think I got about 6 cm (x 2 = 12cm) and a Ninja 2 is 11,6 cm wide.

Tight, but should fit.

Yes it does... Hm, should I go for the Noctua NH-U9B instead?

It's only 95mm wide and it comes with a backplate, thats better.

Not sure about if it beats the Ninja in cooling though...

Don't see why any of these coolers shouldn't fit. I have a NH-U12P in my SOLO, it fits (even though it's a bit snug in there) and it's a beast. I have a GA-P35-DS3L, the dimensions are the same with your mobo and the CPU mounting location looks about the same as well. Worst case scenario: you have to bend a few of the fins on the cooler a bit. Doesn't sound too bad.

My newly updated heatsink/fan shows that Prolimatech Megahalems fits in antec SOLO. Its dimension is (L)130mm X (W)74mmX (H)158.7mm.

Large heatsinks have slightly different sizes.
Hope this will be useful.

Maybe I misunderstood something here, you can put a fan on the Ninja in a Solo--I know because I have done that. I am referring to the Ninja Plus.
