Difference in temperature of cores on i7 860?

Post by ziphnor » Sun Nov 08, 2009 4:47 am

I just setup my new system yesterday with a Core i7 860 CPU and a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 pro cooler. My case is a P180 mini with the fans that came with the case (set to low).

In both idle and load there seems to be up to 7C temperature difference between the hottest and the coolest core. For example, as i type this Real Temp 3.00 reports 34/28/32/27 for the cores.

I tried putting them under load for an hour or so (prime 95 with 8 workers), this yielded 57/52/53/53 as maximum temps (12minutes in). Core Temp 0.99.5 reported a max of 57/51/52/52.

Does anyone know if this is normal or whether it means my cooler is poorly mounted? Is there any reason to do anything about it? (id rather be playing Dragon Age than playing with my CPU Cooler :)

Dragon Age must be fun. :)

I have a dual core and have gotten a 2C difference at idle between the two cores, never saw anything more than that. I think 7C sounds like a lot, but you need someone with quad core to answer that question. Interesting question about the cooler not being properly mounted causing that large of a difference with one core.
