Ops, about 2 mm

Snug fit, but the door will actually close without touching the fan

... Answer, yes it did fit, and by the smallest possible margin too

Some temps (Q9650 @3,00GHz):

Intel-cooler max temp after two runs in 3DMark06: 71°C
Scythe Orochi max temp after two runs in 3DMark06: 58°C

average_joe, I'm sure your report will be valuable for lots of readers. Thank you.

Having said that, it's safe to say that the Orochi will fit most enthusiast tower cases in terms of width but the location of the CPU socket on the mobo will dictate more whether it will interfere with the PSU, optical drives or other components.

I'm still of the opinion that the Orochi is too heavy to mount with the motherboard vertical. In time, its spring mounts will weaken. The stress on the motherboard is very high.

Some readers may recall that I wrote about a completely silent PC with no moving parts on an open bench setup in our anechoic chamber, using an Orochi, with the board mounted flat so the heatsink was straight on top. Recently, we chose to house that system in a case to save on bench top space. The Orochi had to be abandoned. The AMD clip just did not give us enough security mounted vertically -- the clip barely engaged the notches in the plastic HS retention clip.

Indeed Mike, it's very heavy. And I certaintly don't want to drop the case more than 1 cm, or something will break inside. Scythe should actually include a sticker that say: "Caution heavy CPU- heatsink inside, do not drop"

The Intel mounting-solution uses a backplate and bolts so it won't come off, but there still is a 1,2 kg load for the MB...

Here is another picture with a better overview. Sorry for the bad light.

A snug fit indeed! What are the fans speeds at those temperatures?

450 rpm according to my MB sensor. The Noctua runs at 800 rpm.

Idle-temp is 33°C (RealTemp 3.40)

Hi,

It is too bad that the fins are not oriented to work with the rear exhaust fan very well. This is why the tower designs (Ninja et al) are so elegant.

I am also considering Orochi with Solo in my next pc :)
see /forums/viewtopic.php?p=497430#497430 (I am not allowed to post links yet :)

What fans are you using?
Noctua NF-S12B in the back and antec 140mm stock cooler?

It looks like the CPU cooler is smaller than the case cooler to me...

Is it possible to replace the CPU cooler?
Noctua has a 140 mm that is much better than the cooler included by scythe

Yes I have the same question for Orochi and Noctua fan, Does noctua 120mm will too big for side door?
And can I put noctua 92mm on Orochi?

Yes, you can say it is damm huge. That said, if I can't get the Noctua NH-D14 to fit in my Antec Remote Fusion Max, I will be ordering an orochi (since the case was reviewed somewhere with using the orochi...might have been here...I thought the height of the orochi was the same as the NH-D14 which is why I bought one, turns out if it 5cm shorter... so not sure if it will work or not yet).
