"Vertical line" when applying thermal paste?

Post by Mikae1 » Wed May 05, 2010 5:42 am

Arcticsilver.com says thermal paste should be applied on a "vertical line" for my i5-750 processor. Seems it depends on from what direction you look at the mobo/CPU when they say vertical.
Any idea?

I know most likely it wont matter much at all. I was going for a airsoft gun bullet sized blob in the middle (spread by the heatsink itself) but then read that the cores are placed on a line for the i5 and thought it might make a (small) difference.

BTW, I will be using Prolimatech PK-1 with a Megahalems (mounting a Nexus real silent fan). I will try to go fanless for the CPU if the temperatures seem fine.

The goal is to have a thin layer with no air bubbles, and in the relevant place. With a heatspreader you can't see the core beneath. I'm not familiar with the new Intels (i3/5/7).

Found this image of the i5:

A line that reaches over both cores would be best I think, rather than a blob in the middle.

That's a picture of an i5-6xx (w/graphics core), not an i5-750.

Looks like a slick chip the i5-6xx - Not one, but TWO LCD displays on chip where you can watch those busy little instructions whizzing down the pipelines. And it even has a removable cover to protect those instructions when they need some privacy.

Find this out after I bought the plain non-LCD i5-750.

Back to the OP, some application techniques shown here:

Dont the new chips have brand and serial info written on the heat spreader?

I know the pre 'i' series ones did...
