I7 930 stock with Noctua D14.... on the hot side?

Post by panda-R » Wed Aug 18, 2010 10:44 am

Hey peeps,

I tried to keep noise to a minimum in my new build with some quality components but my temps don't seem that great.

i7 930 stock
Noctua D14 w/ both fans on the silent adapters.
Gigabyte x85a-ud3r
Silverstone FT02 180x3 fans on low, 120mm fan exhaust plugged in directly to mobo

I'm Idling at

Core 0: 37
Core 1: 36
Core 2: 35
Core 3: 32

is this normal for Core 0 and Core 3 to be so diff in temp?

My prime 95 with 8 threads yields the following temps:

Core 0: 64
Core 1: 63
Core 2: 61
Core 3: 58

No overclocking at all, any thoughts?

Core i7s are notorious for running hot when stressed. But to me that looks OK. Variations in temp between cores in multi-core CPUs are entirely normal. The CPU management system tries to distribute load evenly over the, in this case, eight available cores, four actual and four virtual (hyperthreading). It will constantly bring cores in and out, and also deploy Turbo mode if it is enabled as load on the CPU increases, and decreases. As this is a dynamic process you are never likely to end up with every core under exactly the same load, and consequently heated up to the same degree.

Overall if you have a quiet system and those temperature results you should be very pleased.

These numbers look very good to me for an i7 930. Ive built PCs with higher load temps and still running very well.

OC will not necessarily raise these numbers.
My Q6600 CPU was at 39-43 idle when all was set to auto in the BIOS @2.4ghz. Then when I manually configured a decent OC to 3GHz and manual voltages temps dropped to 32-37.

Temps also have to do with room temp. What is your room temp?

Again - these numbers are very good - around 60c with full 8 thread load.

maybe not normal, but it happens a lot, my i7-920 has bigger differences in core temps than that.

nice build, now it's time to start overclocking.

thanks yall..

my room temp is around 23-24C so it's a little on the hotter side i guess.

I guess I won't be too worried about these temps as long as they don't go over 70 :D

70 is certainly not a problem. You can safely turn down the speed of your fans a lot.

When does it start throttling? Is it 90 degrees?
