Any socket 478 to 1155 bracket adapter?

Post by Vicotnik » Fri May 20, 2011 12:59 am

I have a Scythe Ninja (rev A, the first version) with the socket 478 clip. The clip hooks into four holes in the plastic frame that surrounds the CPU socket on a socket 478 motherboard, the same holes the stock 478 cooler uses.

Among the accessories that came with the Ninja there is such an adapter, but for socket 775 - the small metal things in the plastic bag in the middle of the picture. They are screwed into a custom backplate and provides those holes that the clip hooks into.

I need a similar adapter but for socket 1156/1155 but it seems like no-one is selling one. Strange, since it seems like a trivial thing to construct and would allow for almost any socket 478 cooler (provided it uses the standard mounting system) to be used with socket 1156/1155. Does such an adapter exist?

Although Scythe did release an LGA1156 Conversion Kit for the early Mugen 2 models I am not aware that anything was ever released for your Ninja cooler. There is a chance you could still use it on an 1155/56 motherboard if you select one of the Asrock motherboards which has their Combo Cooler Option. Combo Cooler means that the boards have 775 cooler fitting holes as well as 1155/56. The issue however may be that the stock CPU baseplate fitted to all 1155/56 motherboards will obstruct the supplied 775 backplate. So you might have to do some work on the Scythe 775 mounting for it to work, even on an Asrock motherboard. Part of the potential problem is that the 775 holes on the Asrock motherboards are angled so alternative 775 fitting kits which fit around the stock 1155 backplate may or may not work with the Asrocks. But of these alternatives, if you can find one, the Scythe Mugen 2 LGA1156 Conversion Kit looks a possible if you are prepared to drill holes in it.

Thanks for the reply lodestar. :) I decided bite the bullet and get a Ninja III.. My Ninja rev A will have to stay with the 605e when I sell the old stuff.

It should be a simple matter to mount the Ninja with some (insulated) washers in place of the back plate on an Asrock board.

the Ninja III is not equal to the old Ninja might be better off getting the Scythe Mugen 2 REV.B..

I went with an MSI board, for other reasons. I only have the socket 478-hooks, no other accessories to the Ninja rev A, so I would have to construct the mounting system myself. I actually thought a while about that before I came to my senses. ;)

Yeah, I know it's not the best one out there. But the fin spacing is wide and I felt it was best since it will have very little airflow. I was gonna go with the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus at first but decided on the more expensive Ninja III. Anyone would be fine I think. I aim for low power, low noise.
