Where did all the air-coolers go?

Post by zoob » Sat Jan 28, 2012 12:55 pm

What happened to these heatsinks? I can't seem to find them on sale

- Prolimatech Megahalems
- Thermalright HR-02 (Macho edition included)
- Thermalright AXP140

It's like the Megahalems dropped off the face of the planet after they were on sale for $45 every week, and the HR-02 and most Thermalright products are no longer available.

I'm guessing that possibly retailers like the better profit margin of other brands.

Antec Solution SLK1600 Case, Corsair CX450M PS, i7-3770, ASUS P8Z77-V_LK, Kingston HyperX DDR3-1600 CL9 with XMP, Cooler Master Hyper 212, 1 PWM fan on duct to the rear of the chassis connected to CPU header.

Some things have turned around in our modern society. Long ago when
men would scream and flog the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft.
Today, it's called golf.

Thanks but those either ship to U.S. only, or cost half the price of the heatsink (which is already much more expensive than they used to cost) to ship to Canada. :(

Sites like Newegg have no Thermalright products in stock, and the Megahalems is no longer listed at NCIX. The Noctua NH-D14 which used to regularly go on sale for $60 is now regularly $80.

Suppose I'll just hang in a bit longer and maybe by the time IVB comes out I'll be able to collect all of the parts I want.

I've noticed this trend as well. Considering how expensive these huge air coolers were, I'm pretty sure they didn't sell as well as the alternatives. These days it seems like the popular items that sell well are cheap but highly effective coolers like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 models or the closed-loop liquid cooling products like the Corsair Hydro line.

There's probably the reason for the(btw excellent) HR-02 Macho edition; the original HR-02 barely sold at all which means loss. The Megahalems is getting a bit old, and even coolers age faster marketwise nowadays. While still good there's little reason for retailers to carry it.
