Scythe Big Shuriken 3

Post by lodestar » Wed Jul 10, 2019 4:46 am

Manufacturer's web page is here.

Scythe say that it is fitted with the 17mm Kaze Flex 120 slim PWM fan. This is a review (in German). The previous Big Shuriken 2 had a 12mm fan.

Points to note: Some vendors say it is has a 15mm fan. They are correct, the 17mm dimension quoted by Scythe includes the anti-vibration pads. Minus these it is a 15mm fan. As noted in the review an extra set of screws for a 25 mm high fan is supplied as standard. Height with a 17mm fan is 69mm, with a 25mm fan this would be 77mm. The Big Shuriken 2 was 58mm high with the 12mm fan.

Interesting. I usually recommended getting a 25mm fan for the Big Shuriken 2 if there was enough clearance for it. It'll be interesting to see the new model's stock performance.

he tried it out with a noctua a12x25, got a 3-7 degrees more performance vs the scythe slim fan depending on the heat load. the noctua l12s (70mm when the slim fan is mounted underneath, so the most direct competition) also ran a tad cooler on high heat loads, though you sacrifice ram clearance vs. the big shuriken 3's allowance for any height dimms. he also found the a12x15 (included with the l12s) to sound a bit quieter than the kaze flex, though he only touches on max rpm. it's worth keeping in mind that if you're using either of these coolers in case that has a max height close to 70mm, the noctua might sound better in part because the fan won't be flush against a case panel.

Useful from a max fan speed perspective, I guess...but, doesn't give insight on temp and noise comparisons down in the 800rpm range. The NH-L12S goes for $50 vs $41 for the BS 3. So, if you need to add a 25mm fan, that'll add $10-25.

are there many cases that have a 80-110mm cooler restriction? the boutique small form factor cases seem to go <48mm, <70mm (specifically for the l12s), or leap to ~130mm and beyond. there's definitely a lack of coolers in the 70-110 range where a 25mm fan on a l12s/bs3 might give you more performance (and a better noise profile). but above that you fall into the noctua d9l (110mm)/c14s (115mm with fan below)/u9s (125mm) range of coolers which can handle a lot more heat and will likely outperform at low fan speed due to mass. admittedly, that's also a slightly different price bracket.

Just offhand, Silverstone RVZ03 is 83mm, SG12 is 82mm, FTZ01-E is 82mm.

I can confirm the RVZ03 has a little more clearance, the NH-L12S has 70mm height, and still fits without touching NF-A12x15 as a side vent case fan, so my estimation is that the case has 86mm clearance, i still have the link of the build on my signature (minimi).

It's important for companies, even if their products are inferior, to gain market share, otherwise Noctua would start charging £300 for a heatsink.

I just read some reviews and it looks like this CPU cooler fan is a big hit, especially for the price.
My only concern would be the noise output under load.
