papst fans clicking/mechanical/motor noise
hello, just wondering if this is inherent of all the papst fans--or at least their silent versions? i just bought a bunch of various sizes and all of them make a somewhat muted rapid clicking noise (well, kinda like a low revving engine sound). the only one that doesn't make this noise is a loud "non-silent" 120x30'ish papst that i have, which i've tried at lower rpms as well.

Just curious, when people post that their fans click or not for panaflow vs papst....
maybe give some manufacturing info? eg, if on the sticker where it was made, etc
A batch of my recent papst fans were made in Hungry (from what I remember so don't hold me to it just yet). The 120mm ones don't click. But the 80mm ones seem to have a very slight click. All are running at either 5 or 7v.

forgot about this post.. hehe.. anyways, thanks for the replies and yes, after you mentioned it, i noticed all of the fans in this clicking batch were made in hungary, except for the high speed 120 i mentioned (which was made in germany). .. oh well, i guess i'll live with it for now.. trying out panaflo next time.

Seens to me that any Papst fans made in Hungary click, even the FGL ones! I have 3 120mm Papst fans (2 F/2GL and 1 FGL) and they ALL CLICK at default 12v and undervolting them! Wished I didn't purchase them as I'm not happy....al bundy wrote:All sizes of Papst fans I've tried have clicked when undervolted, except for the Papst 120mm FGL fans.
Anyone know where I can get Papst fans MADE IN GERMANY? Would like to try a couple of those....

I have a 4412FGL for my intake in my SLK3700BQE, and the only noise I can hear is a low hum. However, this is probably due to vibration transferring to the raw metal of the case. I have EAR isolators coming in tomorrow, i'll let you know if tha tmakes any difference. I currently use regular metal screws + a silicone seperator.
I did not have any clicking sounds from any of the 80mm Papst fans, either old or recent. Of 92mm, I have only old ones and they are fine. The 120mm fans are the ones that annoy me: from the recent purchase, 2 out of 3 fans exhibit this clicking sound.
It does seem to me that Papst fans are deteriorating in quality since they moved the production into "cheaper" places.
EDIT: On the subject of "made in Germany", I could not find any. Let us know if you find any for it seems there is no more production in Germany at all.

Please post more information about these bad Papst fans such as the model number and country of origin. Note that Papst like most fan manufacturers makes a wide range of fans, most are higher speed ball bearing models which normally would not be of interest for silent computing.
My (2) 120mm 4412FGL fans are quiet, no clicking or mechanical noise. I've run them at both 5 and 7v (DC voltage, not pwm). Haven't checked to see where they were manufactured, tho.
However, Papst fans are pricey, if folks are paying a premium for the low speed, sleeve bearing, quiet Papst fans and getting clicky fans then perhaps Papst fans should be avoided.
