Yet another eternal fan question: 92mm

Post by burcakb » Sun Jul 04, 2004 10:44 am

No longer able to bear the noise of the Zalmans at 5V/1400 rpm, I've decided to replace the 92mm fans on my CNPS7000A and SP97.

I've read most of the gazillion posts out there but I'm still not sure what'll please me, so here I am.

When making suggestions, please remember that I HAVE done a lot of research and VERY FEW places will ship to Turkey and I'll be paying a bloody treasure to shipping:

Alternative 1:
Acoustifan 92mm, thermal controlled. Pros: I've used the 80 & 120mm versions, these guys are good. I've talked with the other acoustinut Edward Ng, and he assures me I'll be pleased. Cons: Very expensive, even more expensive to ship. 2x92 + 2x120 sets me back nearly 200$. OUCH!

Alternative 2:
Panaflo M1A. Everyones favorite, the Panaflo. But everybody talks about the 80 or 120mm versions, I didn't come across mention of the 92mm. Plus there's the issue of Chinaflos. Also, this is the M version, not the L version. I have no idea how quiet it'll be @ 5V. Again I'm aiming for 2x92 + 2x120. Estimated cost: <$100

Alternative 3:
Nexus Realsilent. Says 27 CFM and 19 dBA. One of the quietest specs on paper. However, operating voltage range is a little thin. Doesn't go below 10V. Again cost will be <$100.

Alternative 4:
Papst 3412 N/2GL. I'm very much irritated by clicking noise so I'm not prone to getting Papst. Expensive, difficult to get hold of, etc.

Alternative 5:
Noiseblocker USF SE or SE2. My 80 & 120 noiseblockers are quite good but they click horribly. Again, expensive.

I'm looking to get two 92mm and two 120mm fans. I won't ask about what 120mm fan, I know everybody has their favorite.

As you can see, when the shipping is included, these fans will cost me two arms, two legs and my head so I'm really picky about what to get.

Try an Evercool (or Titan) aluminium fan, 92mm.

For the CNPS7000A, you cut the aluminium frame (the real weight is here), and leave only the plastic fan..

The L1A 92mm Chinaflos that I use at 5V aren't much quieter than the stock Z-7000 fan so I can only imagine that an M1A Panaflo would be even louder and therefore not a contender.

If I were you, before I mail-ordered expensive (to you) fans, I'd try to find some locally (used). There are plenty of broken PSUs everywhere, that have perfectly good/quiet fans, both 92mm and 120mm. Not sure what's available in Turkey, but there must be computer outlets that deal with broken Power Supplies.

For instance, Antec TruePower PSUs have a quiet 92mm fan inside. Fortron PSUs come with a number of different 120mm fans.

Just a thought....

Going by Bluefront's suggestion, if you can dig up any busted Enermax Noisetakers, the fans in them are Globe 80mm and 92mm. Globe makes the AcoustiFans! While I have not yet gotten to test the Enermax fans vs. the AcoustiFans, it might be worth a try since it can save you quite a bit of money...

The only locally available power supplies worth even looking at are the Fortrons (most of them 300W older versions with noisy 80mm fans) and the Zalmans - and oh yes the Thermaltakes. The rest are absolute junk.

Locally available 92mm fans are the Vantec Stealth and the Zalman (which I got and is noisy as hell)

Overclocking frenzy is quite new around here and quiet computing simply unheard-of (one reason I'm looking into setting up a business :) ) One of the runner-ups in the worst case ever contest happens to be the most common one sold around here. At 17$ including a 300W PSU, no wonder.

Sigh, I suppose I'll have to go with the Acoustifans. Can anyone comment on the Nexus? That looks promising too. I couldn't find one who'd ship to Turkey but I've got a couple of friends who come along regularly...

DG, that's a good one for the Zalman, but I've also got a Thermalright to think about... Maybe I'll get two different brands..
