tek-chain fan

Post by frankgehry » Sun Feb 20, 2005 2:11 pm

Does anyone have the new fan I've seen on a couple of sites? It's called a Tek-Chain and I believe its made by Enermax. It has sleeve bearings unlike most Enermax fans however.

It seems to replace the globes that Bill used to sell at mnpctech so its probably supposed to be a quiet fan. - FG

Enermax doesn't manufacture fans. Most Enermax fans are ball bearing Globe fans.

I thought that was everflow, not enermax.

anyhow, the tek-chain looks suspiciously like a Power Cooler fan to me. It's not on their website but the numbering scheme and the plastic casing mold looks too similar. Power Cooler is the company that makes the Zalman fans and I suspect the Coolermaster LED fans.

Yes!

Hey, I'm leary of any LED fan being marketed as quiet, but the Tek-Chain really impressed me.. as well as Jim @ Coolcases. Both of us are now implementing the 120x25 fans in our silent packages. We're gonna resell the 80, 92mm eventually as well.

FYI: manufacturer/distributor link

Frank,

From another thread I understand that you have one of the 120mm Tek-Chain fans now. How do they compare to the Nexus 120mm fan?

I need to order some small stuff and a new 120mm fan. But of course the supplier of the small stuff doesn't have Nexus fans and vice versa. So if the Tek-Chain is OK, then I could save some shipping.

@ FG,

Let us know what you think of the Tek-Chain. My customers have been quite pleased with it.

From what I've read, they are pretty nice, but still don't beat the Nexus.

Hi Bill

Hi Bill,

Josh is right. I did a little fan comparison and although not as silent as the nexus its more flexible with a higher top end and the built in speed controller is nice too. By the way a lot of people have been asking for quiet led fans of which there are not many to choose from. - FG

Since if Bill isn't selling the Globe S1202512L-3M anymore...where do we get them from now? Do I recall correctly that Globe literally stop making this fan?

By the way, looks like you made a good choice in choosing that Tek Chain fan Bill. Most of your customers I'm sure would gladly give up silent-geek levels of quietness for a better top-end and some bling-bling. 8)

I just built my cousins computer with 4 of these 120mm tek chain fans, 1 intake, 1 exhaust, 1 on XP-120, and 1 on the side panel window. These fans are very quiet when turned all the way down, or even on the middle setting. The 4 fans are almost inaudible unless you put your ear right up on the case, and thats in my music studio where their is no external noises to drown out the noise, the seagate hard drive in the case is louder than all 4 fans combined. I have a pc with 3 120mm nexus fans and this pc with 4 tek chains is almost just as quiet. For a LED 120mm fan, i don't think this fan can be beat, from my experience with building many systems for people, the coolermaster 120mm silent LED fans are a close second but need to be undervolted with a fanmate. Central Computer systems here in the San Jose, bay area has these 120mm tek chain fans for $11.95 each, and the 80mm ones for $6.95 each, they have 3 locations and have plenty of them in stock.....Marxx

Thanks for posting your experience Marxx.

So your samples are louder than the Nexus fans. In what way? Bearing noise? More wooshing noise? Are you comparing your Nexus and Tek Chain fans at the same RPM?

Thanks!

Actually, a great deal of my customers are silent-geeks. Silent geeks like Hot Rod paint and monster airbrush murals too 8)

Return of the globe.

Post by frankgehry » Tue Apr 19, 2005 4:05 am

Bill,

Is there any chance you will be able to get a hold of globes again. Its kind of ironic that a fan on the recommended list cannot be purchased anywhere in the us and they seem to be impossible to find in europe too. I guess compucase stopped shipping their cases with globe fans and that was how they came into the country. I've heard from one dealer who said the chinese have a lot of export restrictions otherwise he could have purchased them. Anyway I like the JMC quite a bit, they're very well made and quiet. I also have a bi-sonic that I got from mousers and its a really good fan too. - FG

I'm glad some others have confirmed the quality of the tek-chain - for a while it didn't seem like many were buying them, but as you say there are many who want a silent fan with leds. And although you're supposed to be able to turn them off I never could see how to do that.

One more item. BestByteInc has a close relationship with dynaeon/top motor/ dynatron. If you order 2000 fans they will custom build one to your spec.. They have a low speed 120mm that's a special order item that can be spec'd with quite a few options. The BestByte guy is going to meet with the engineers and since dynaeon makes the 80? or 92 nexus the the idea is to produce a cheaper and slightly faster version of the nexus. Pretty cool.

If Bill would be able too, that would indeed be awesome!

Bill might not be the only source though... [/forshaddowing]. ;)

That is correct.

Jim Hanson (coolcases) and I tried every avenue possible to get more Globe fans. Frustrating experience to say the least. We're always keeping our eyes open for any future leads.

Thanks everybody!

the Glacialtech Silentblades are a bit different. They are double ball bearing blowing ~30CFM with 950RPM. The Globes are sleeve bearing and push more air ~55CFM (?) with 1600RPM.

the Silentblades I have seen have a real issue with sample consistency. Some of the Silentblades I've seen (80mm and 120mm) vibrate and click very heavily.

I'm guessing the reason behind the popularity with Globes is the fact that they push more air than Nexus, Silentblade etc.. and act well with PWM, unlike the other popular fan in the 1600RPM class, the Papst 4412F/2GL. Not to mention the cheap price.

The Globes I have (there have been reports of fan quality inconsistency) are very similar to the better Silentblades I have regarding bearing noise. So it's basicly a matter of airflow need.

The Silentblades use everflow bearings, that some users have reported to wear out quickly and that they start make loud noise when this happens.

Hope this helps.
