It all depends on what CPU you are running, case ventilation, how much noise you can stand etc.

If you are running a P4 Prescott, I don't think a SilentX (or Nexus would be better) it would not cool well enough. Now, if you are running a Athlon64 3200+ Winchester or newer core, a Nexus would be fine as it is a much, much cooler processor.

I have a XP90 heat sink on my A64 3000+ in a micro-ATX case. The fan I use is a Panaflo L1BX 92mm fan, it is the one with RPM monitoring. Anyway, with AMD Cool and Quiet engaged, it runs at 953 RPM and is silent. I set it to increase in speed to 1500 RPM after the temp hits 42C (when gaming or encoding video) It is still quiet but I can hear the air flowing and that does not bother me. One day it might actually hit 60C if I am gaming in a desert and it will ramp to the full 2100 RPM which is quite loud. That is OK though, if it gets that hot I would want it to let me know.

To sum it up:

Intel P4 Prescott Panaflo L1BX
AMD A64 FX 4000+ Panaflo L1BX
AMD A64 Winchester 3000+ to 3800+ Nexus 92mm
Poorly ventilated case hot case Panaflo L1BX

Hope that helps

If you need something with more airflow than a nexus, consider an evercool instead. I've had TWO of the L1BX from Panaflow, they were buzzy at all levels. The evercools are available from CompUSA. They're rebadged as being CompUSA, but they're all aluminum, so they're easy to identify. Plus, you have 21 days to take it back if you don't like it. Would definetly undervolt, though.
