Should I change my 120 fans to Nexus?

Post by scrandman » Sat Jul 16, 2005 9:36 am

I'm running my Antec SLK3000 with 3 120's. The rear fan is the standard Antec that came with the case on the slowest setting (probably around 5V). The other 2 are ebuyer 99p cheapies (the black ones they don't sell anymore). One is at the front of the case, the other is strapped onto my "custom" 6800 heatsink. Both of these are at 5V and put out about the same air as the Antec (possibly slightly more in fact), and produce about the same noise as the Antec one too.

I've been toying with the idea of getting some of the Nexus orange 120's and running them at 12V.

I'd appreciate some input on the following:

Would I get any decrease in noise?
Would I get any increase in airflow?

The cheapest I can find the Nexus fans is £12 GBP at KustomPCs - they are fairly local to me, so I wouldn't need to pay postage, however having said that I don't want to be spending 3 x £12 for something that gives no benefit or indeed is worse overall.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: BTW - does anyone know of anywhere else they sell Nexus fans cheaper than above?

^^ BUMP ^^

Having seen the number of people on these forums using Nexus fans in an Antec SLK3000 (which is supplied with the Antec fan), I'd have thought that at least someone could have posted an opinion?

Come on people, speak up...

Hi,

you probably know the Nexus fans are made by Yate Loon, apparently from the D12SL-12 model (with an inline resistor added]. If you don't want to spend that much on Nexus fans, get Yate Loons from Silencio.

Sory for not commenting on the first post, not familiar with that case.

I'm extremely happy with my 3 nexus'es (1 case, 1 modded into psu, 1 92mm modded in my zalman 7000 CPU HS). My case is very similar to yours, except mine is made from aluminium...

The most audible component in my sys atm is the nexus I have modded into my PSU, but it isn't decoupled from the chassis, so I expect it's the thin aluminium that's causing the noise. I'm waiting for the Phantom 500 to become available in denmark. Then I'll move that nexus to rear exhaust duty.

I got my nexus fan for $15USD. Worth every penny if you ask me. I'd say the nexus at 7V is roughly the same as the antec tricool at the lowest setting. Nexus has really good quality control - my yate loon fan clicks a lot, and my nexus does not.

For what it's worth, I am currently running 3 Nexus 120mm in my SLK3000b (intake, exhaust, and XP-120). They are very quiet and move quite a respectable amount of air. Even in the summer heat and humidity my P4 and WD Raptor have been nice and comfy.

[EDIT: Got my computers confused. The MaxLine's I mentioned are in the server, not my desktop...]

I seriously think it's your best bet to get Yate Loons, the price is around 5GBP per fan, shipping is also very cheap from Silencio. Most people seem to be happy with them, also my own Yate Loons are good. So considering the prices, it won't hurt to test them.

yes, the SPCR special offer ended a few days ago. He still has Yate Loons in his eBay shop though.
