Anybody convert their Nexus fans to 3-pin only?

Post by BoB-O » Tue Aug 30, 2005 9:34 pm

Hey all,

I'm trying to keep the cabling neat in my new build. My 120mm fans seem to work fine on my Asus A8N-SLI Premium when I only use the 3-pin connector. Has anybody done a chop job and removed the 4-pin molex connectors? Any advice?

Thanks,
BoB

Should work, just wrap the stubs in electrical tape or something so they don't short.

I didn't even tape up the ends. If you have a good pair of snips, you can cut pretty deep into the connector, few things are going to touch it there.

On the 120mm fans, the 3-pin comes out of the 4-pin, so you have no choice but to do some dissection. It looks like the 92mm can be simply snipped.

Ooops, sorry.

If you want a clean job, I'd suggest cutting the wires and connectors with it, stripping them and soldering them to the little tabs in the 3 pin connector. Better yet, you could get new 3 pin connectors which are very cheap and crimp the wires.

I did this a week or so ago. Just pull the wires from the 4-pin molex ends using forceps, or whatever tool you have, splice the ground wires together and wrapped with electrical tape.

I'll probably do the same for the other two Nexus 120s whenever I do a complete case cleaning during a school break.

I've done it on all my 120 Nexii. I just pull the pins out of the Molex, insulate them with electric tape and tape them all down against the cable bundle. Cleans things up nicely, and makes it much easier to route the wiring through tight spots.

I wanted to preserve the possibility of using the Molex connectors in the future, so I removed the pins and sockets from the plastic Molex shells and mated the appropriate pairs with heatshrink tubing over each mated connector pair. Electrical tape works fine, but I greatly dislike the sticky black mess when it is removed several years later.

In my P180 setup, I just took some duct tape and taped the whole 4-pin connector along with unnecessary wiring in the case ceiling.
