A 150mm fan in a 500W $30 PSU? 150mm?

Post by Felger Carbon » Fri Sep 15, 2006 10:58 pm

This fan looks hokey in the illustration, like a fake painting. I assume it has to be a real fan. I'm a real fan of big fans these days (pun intended), but this one snuck past me.

My computer need 82W, not 500W, but I'm almost willing to invest $30 just to see the fan. PSU fans are always ball bearing, though. I don't allow those in my home even if they wipe their feet at the door. :)

Taste is a personal thing, but that is one UGLY power supply!

Some technical flaws:

1) the intake grill on the PSU looks very restrictive

2) the "honeycomb" design means some hot air will be exhausted back inside the case

3) related to 2, you might get some recirculation of hot exhaust air because intake and exhaust are so close to each other

I mean, a 15cm fan is pretty rare (I'm not aware of any others that are available retail), so I can see its rarity value, but be prepared to rip out the fan and junk the PSU.

Hmm... $30... either the producers choose to keep their profit margins to less than 1000%, or

price of led fan - $9.90
cost of punching holes - $2.90
price for design - $14.90
cost of components - $lol

(sorry but PSUs are freaking expensive in my home country so I may sound a little ranty)

Know any friends who like their computers "cool" (e.g. those that use led fans & OCZ PSU) and not involved in SPCR? Resell to them. They might even thank you for such a bargain. :D

One more major technical flaw: It's a Powmax. Use it if you want your system to go "Pow." You have been warned. Jonnyguru blew up three of them trying to review this thing. Link: http://www.jonnyguru.com/PSU/Assassin/P ... assin.html

This could make an interesting modding project. Replace the inards of that PSU with those of a decent one ;)

 LOL, looks like this PSU is a strong contender for the "Worst PSU Ever Made Available To An Unsuspecting Public" award:

from the jonnyguru review-
THE GOOD: At least it looks good and comes in a lot of colors.

THE BAD:

Can't even do 300W without blowing up.
Voltages are all over the place.
Active PFC? Any PFC? PFC? What's that?
Very poor efficiency.

THE MEDIOCRE:

Why did I even waste time with this review? PLEASE CLICK ON AN AD BANNER!

That psu is a Piece of crap.

I'd still buy one though, at newegg for cheaper than svc, then gut it of fancy molexes, fancy sleeving, the fan, and the mesh, and then stomp the rest of the crap into the ground.

I've seen worse. Also a $30 PSU originally manufactured by TTGI, comes with either a 120mm LED fan or 2 LED fans. I blew 4 of them in P2 and Athlon systems in 5 mins each.

 I found that review hilarious to read. You don't get that kind of sarcastic tone in product reviews everyday you know!

If nothing else it was a very good example to show the difference between flashy bargain basement parts and simple quality manufacturing. Like the author I've also seen smaller PSUs with better looking internals (most recently an old 250W SH unit).

I see what Felger and Ryan are getting at though. This might be a good case or fan to use for other purposes or to transplant the internals from a better PSU to. Too bad that review didn't even bother mentioning fan noise... not that I blame him for the oversight. :P

Wouldn't such a big fan take the PSU out of ATX spec size (150x140x86mm)? Or are fans measured on the diagonal?

Normally, fans are indeed measured on the side. I was wondering about this myself, but couldn't recall the ATX spec sizing.

If you follow all ATX specs, a 150mm fan won't fit. But this wouldn't be the first PSU that is longer than the specs allow.

The semi fanless Antec 500W PSU comes to mind.
Several Topower made PSU's with two 80mm fans in series were longer too.

Oh, if the length is the limiting factor, then sure. I didn't know which was which. It's easier to make a longer PSU than a wider one. :D

Minus the fan frame perhaps it can fit. Remember CNPS-9700 and its "110mm" fan? That's what someone suggested.

But... the fan has got a frame. So either the frame isn't 150mm or the PSU is more than 150mm wide?
Or is it an uber-nice tight fit? I can't really tell from the pics.

Well, in a powmax, the components are so non-existant, they can all fit under the fan, even if it IS a 38mm thick.

Maybe it's like the Silverstone FN91 (I think that's it) which uses 80mm mounting, but a 92mm fan. in which case, it would be a 120 or so mm frame, mounting a 150 fan.

Call me a cynic, but I can think of an easier answer than any of these. They're lying. Just like the 250mm fans that're 220mm, I think they just used creative rounding. The other alternatives (outsized fan for the frame, PSU wider than standard) are possible, but far less likely, IMO. I doubt that a cheap PSU maker like this would get a 150mm blade, 140mm frame fan custom-made for such a cheap PSU.

Indeed. 150mm is just a typo. It's actually a 14cm. And Powmax? /me pukes

Chris, have you actually measured the fan? What's the source of your information? Do you know the brand/model of the fan?

I remember having seen a Powmax Assassin at a computer fair; I eyeballed the fan as 14cm. I don't know the brand/model of the fan.
