Recommend for 80x15 thin fan for PSU replacement?

Post by tempoct » Sun Nov 19, 2006 10:17 pm

Hi,
I've opened the PSU comes with my Antec Minuet 300. The PSU is rated 300W and has proprietary form factor so replacing the whole PSU is not an option.
The fan inside the PSU is RDH8015B 80mm x 15mm thin fan. Rated 0.17A @ 12v. It has only 2 pin so I guess it run at full speed. I found the data of this fan on the manufacturer website;
http://www.xinruilian.com/product/dc/new/80x80x15.htm

Look like it's 3000 rpm and 33CFM. I'm looking for a replacement of this fan. Any recommendation would be appreciated. Maybe low RPM fan would do it.... (well, the CFM will be less, would that matter much? This is for non-OC A64 3200 system. 2HDD, 1 DVD-RW, Biostar GeForce 6100-M9 mobo, 1 x 80mm case fan)

(Thin fan only...., very limited room in the PSU)

Don't know of any replacement fans, how about undervolting the current one, perhaps with a fan-mate or diodes.

I think cutting the grills out will help, as I've been told thin fans make less pressure and are therefore more affected by airflow impedance.

The stock fan is loud. I tried it on a Fanmate 2 and the bearing noise is still bad.
Maybe I could cut of the whole grill and do some surgery to put 80x25 fan in.
Nevertheless, this fan looks interesting.

There are several 80x15 fans available. This Sanyo is the quietest by far at any voltage. Yeah it's expensive......but since you can't just replace the PSU, it might do the trick.

I have at least six different fans of this size......you want a cheaper alternative? Zalman makes one at around $8. But the Sanyo is the best....

Tempoct, you didn't mention a video card. With no video card, your system power input at the AC socket will be 100W or less, meaning the PSU will be supplying less than 75W, and won't need very much cooling.

On the other hand, if not mentioning a video card was an oversight and your're planning on a GEforce 8800, your tiny box - and its PSU - might need liquid nitrogen cooling.

With no video card, your options increase dramatically. Even SilenX makes, IIRC, an 80x15mm low noise fan. Don't tell anybody else here at SPCR I mentioned this to you; the folks here don't like SilenX (who eat babies for lunch and make very good, very expensive fans but not as costly as the one Bluefront recommended). :D

edit: This fan pushes less CFMs, is quieter, and costs less than Bluefront's recommended fan. It will work very well in a no-video-card environment for you. Pay no attention to the specifications of this or any other fan by any manufacturer; they're all bollocks.

Thanks everyone.
The Sanyo fan looks impressive but uh! $19 is killing me :)
I will use on board card on this one so, no 8800 yet ha ha.
I might just do some surgery and put 80x25 in. Might be the best way...

If space is the only issue preventing you from replacing the PSU... How about the External mCubed EF28 280W FANLESS PSU - It's amazing!

I replaced the 80x15 fan from my Pundit-R350 PSU. It worked out great. Much more quiet and gives me a lot of more fan options.

Thanks everyone. I ended up cutting the PSU and put 80x25 fan instead. Have Panaflo L1A laying around anyway. Much quieter.
Now attacking CPU fan...
