Nexus fans, is it ok to cut off the molex connector?

Post by TheRove » Thu Jan 04, 2007 1:11 pm

I ordered 3 Nexus 120mm fans for my new computer, but I forgot about the ghastly molex connectors. Would it be ok to just cut these off?

Thanks. :)

Yes, if you're sure you'll never use them ever again. I would just tuck them away for the possibility of reusing them in a future build. Nexus fans aren't cheap, you know.

Thanks for the help. It's only one fan I definitely need to cut the molex connectors off because it'll go on my Akasa EVO-120 cooler. Can't really tuck it away, unfortunately.

What's the worst case scenario if it were to shortcircuit? What would it damage?

I cut the Molex ends off all the Yate Loons I buy, nothing bad is going to happen unless you try unplugging the fan while it’s live.

I leave a bit of the wire on and put a small piece of heat shrink tubing so there is no chance of shorts. Probably unnecessary but it can't hurt and it looks better then bare wires.

Worst case it would fry your computer. Most likely...nothing happens besides the PSU shuts off.
Just make sure that no cable sticks out of the cut cables and you'll be fine :)

Ha I was going to ask the exact same question for my nexus 80mm fan :-) And I ended up cutting it off with no problems what so ever....
