Sharkoon 2000 or Scythe S-FLEX 1600?
Hi all,
My CPU is getting very toasty in my case under load, so I'm thinking of installing an extra 120mm fan onto the heatsink and having it on a 0/5/12V switch.
My question is, would I be better with a sharkoon Golf Ball 2000 or a Scythe S-FLEX 1600? Noise is obviously a concern, but the thing could do with being able to move some air, given that it's just going on for when my CPU's hitting the mid-70's.
Thanks for any advice people can give

This is a subject I've considered many times. IMHO.....you would like that particular fan to be of some use at 5V. If both fans are quiet enough at 5V, and both can start reliably at that voltage, your best choice would be the fan that blows the most air at 5V. This probably would be the fan that turns the most RPM/CFM at that voltage. You would think the fan that turns the fastest at 12V, would turn the fastest at 5V. This is not always the case.
My Yate Loon turns about 1350rpm at 12V. My S-Flex turns about 1600rpm at 12V. At 5V the Yate Loon is running about 150rpms faster than the S-Flex. This has to do with the motor windings/magnets. So I guess it pays to check the fans you intend to use at 5V for rpm/noise. 12V is probably too noisy for each of those fans you mentioned, so you will be using 5V more often. Perhaps you could find the spec of each fan at 5V......good luck with that.

Thanks for the replies guys.
As pointed out the Noctua's aren't quite fully proven yet, so I'm going to be avoiding them for now(especially since, if there are the pressure issues that some people are reporting, it being on a CPU HSF is going to be near useless).
I've decided I'll give a sharkoon 2000 a go, and see how it runs. It gives me a higher ceiling for hot days when my CPU is running worryingly hot, but should go quiet enough at 5V(or of course, 0V) for me to put up with it. Thanks everyone

Ah yes, should have mentioned the heatsink in the OP. It's a Scythe Infinity. I've got it pressure mounted and lapped also, but it's not sitting so great(some caps are preventing it from making a good contact) so that's probably why my temps are so insane. I'll probably have to just replace it with an Ultra-120 Extreme or something if these fans don't take my temps to reasonable(and stable) levels.

Well, I got them both, and they're both pretty horrible at 12V. The sharkoon is loud at 12, while the S-flex isn't loud, but has a nasty whine about it that makes the sound quality just overall bad. The Scythe is ok 7 volted and the Sharky at 5V - but I'm tempted just to replace them with Nexus' fans or something at 12 during the day.

Well the 2000 is ok in my opinion at 5V. It's quieter then a 12V nexus by a fair bit. But at night I'm turning the 2K off, it's noisy enough that I can tell when I turn it off, and a few degrees less at night isn't worth having.
I havn't a clue what speed the things are actually spinning at, and speedfans RPM meter is broken.
