Fan isolators via mail order from EU ?

Post by halcyon » Mon Apr 14, 2003 7:12 am

Any place that sells good fan isolators (like these: http://www.siliconacoustics.com/fanisolators1.html ) in EU?

Silicon Acoustics is ok, but having to pay $25 for shipping on goods that cost $8 doesn't really strike as funny to me :)

So, anybody know where to buy them in EU?

regards,
Halcyon

Try McMaster:
http://www.mcmaster.com/

They supply Silicon Acoustics anyway.
I just ordered a bunch of fan isolators from them, they come in bags of 20 ($9.71/bag)

Here's some part #s
Fan isolators; different sizes
5801k8
5801k6

hard drive grommets;
9311k138

Hope this helped

Ah, but they are in the US as well :(

I don't think I can get the postage cheaper from them.

There must be somebody who is buying these parts by the truckload to EU and selling them within EU with decent postage expenses.

Anyone?

cheers,
halcyon

That's a great link, thanks for sharing that. Please, does anybody know which of these part #'s corresponds with the exact item that siliconacoustics is selling?

Here's the fan isolator link.

They don't carry the grommets AFAIK.

Like I said, I just ordered a bunch and I'm in Iceland. PM me and let me know what and how many, I'll just throw them in an envelope and mail them to you. You'd get them in a day or two. Do you use PayPal?

Mr_Smartepants,

thanks for the offer. I need more than a few myself though :(

I misread your location, so I'm happy to see you're within Euope as well.

Can you tell me how much was the postage?

Also, have you been able to correctly identify which part number is the exact same piece as the Fan isolator Silicon Acoustics sells?

Also, has anybody been able to find an alternative for this silica gel damping matt that Directron sells:

http://store.yahoo.com/directron/tnsypw.html

Furthermore, has anybody been able to find good screws, damping mats or similar that can be used with CD-ROM and DVD-drives to dampen some of the vibrations coming from these drives?

regards,
Halcyon

I see that there are actually 3 different sizes of fan isolators (i.e. "PVC Miniature Fan Mounts") at mcmaster.com... Do you happen to know which of these 3 is identical to the type that siliconacoustics.com sells? I suspect it's the mcmaster part #5801K6 - what do you think?

Well I wasn't sure, so I ordered both the 5801K6 and the 5801K8.
The 5801K6 is a snugger fit through the screw hole of the case because measurement 'd' is larger. 5801K8 fits my 120mm panaflo though because the plastic mount hole is 'thicker' than an 80mm. So I would guess that for most fan sizes, the 5801K6 part is a better purchase. If you need to mount 120mm fans with thicker housings, go with the 5801K8 but it'll be a loose fit where it goes through the case metal.

Also, as a side note, if you plan to purchase the grommets, don't forget to order the 'shoulder bolts' as well. Regular long screws might not be thick enough.

I live in Iceland but since I'm in the U.S. Military I maintain a U.S postal address. So I can receive mail from the U.S. with cheap postage AND I can still send mail to my friends in the EU through the Icelandic postal system for low cost.

I've still got about 12 of each size isolators left and most of the grommets.

Is there a particular part number you used for the shoulder bolts? I have the EAR sample kit with the bolts, but I didn't notice them on the Mcmaster Carr site.

I just knew someone would ask that!

No, I don't know the part numbers off hand. I imagine you could dig them up somewhere on their site. I had a handful that came with my Antec Sonata that fit well.

EDIT:
If the shoulder screws are 4-40 thread, then this part number from McMaster might work
94045A513
But they list for $3 each!

I'd say that after looking up all these screws....Just go with regular hard drive screws (or maybe longer case screws). Sigh!
Maybe do some shopping at Home Depot or Ace Hardware.

It's definitely 6-32, here's Seagate installation doc on a hard drive, you see it says 6-32 UNC at the bottom of the first column.

OK, McMaster doesn't carry ANY 6-32 shoulder bolts, period.
They carry 4-40, 8-32, and all metric ones.

Can anyone source a part number from Home Depot or Lowes, etc?

One way to go if you cant find the shoulder bolts is to use a spacer and a regular screw thru it. it would have to be a longer version of the HDD screw, but I think those are easier to find than the should bolts.

I found a source in Finland:

http://www.web-jussi.com/cgi-bin/sql/tu ... l?id=23853

They're not cheap, but for me not the most expensive choice either.

I've tried a lot of them and I think they are good. I think even less firm rubber would be better, but I*m not sure. They hold even a 120mm fan well in place.

I have not tried the McMaster parts and do no know if they are similar/better/worse or not.

Halcyon

www.gelmec.co.uk

Order many for discount (~20p each), otherwise more like 80p each.

McMaster Carr will ship to UK & I think most of Europe for $5. See here for details.

I ordered some from McMaster Carr and the postage was ok, instead of the usual horrendous $50 USD courier fee for 1 100 gramm packet :)

So I can recommend that route for Europeans.

Halcyon
