Scythe Slipstream 800 RPM - shipping to UK?

Post by tutu » Wed Mar 05, 2008 11:37 am

I can't find the Scythe Slipstream 800 in the UK at all. Is there a USA vendor (or europe/japan) that ships to the UK and is relatively cheap?

Thank you for the link.

$7.99 x 3 = $23.97
delivery = $28.00 (USPS Priority) or $39.00 (USPS Express)

Total = £25.90 or £31.39

Import duty = ??

I don't know the time delay regarding delivery or import tax.

It may still work out cheaper than 3 x Noctua fans depending on if I get hit with import tax.

Import duty probably negligible but you will more than likely have to pay VAT at UK rates, unless you choose to evade it. If you think these things are in demand you could buy 30 and flog them off on eBay for £7.99 each :)

Difficult to make a decision. I think a SPCR article on the Slipstream 800/1200 vs Noctua NF-P12 is in order!! :D

From seperate reviews the difference between the slipstream and noctua at the same rpm is small, and both are excellent. But noctuas are far easier to get hold of right now in the UK, thats why my case is full of them!

I could buy the 1200 RPM version and 5v it through a fan controller. Should match the same CFM/DB as the 800 I believe (but I wanted as quiet a system as possible - maybe they are when 5v - I don't know).

I still want a range of airflows. They are going in a P182 that arrived yesterday! So I would hate to wait 2 weeks for the 800 RPMs :( These are OK for intake, exhaust and CPU?

I still have a lot to do - have to get a passive GPU (possible 3650) and a quieter HDD (I have a Raptor  )

I have 2 slipstream 1200rpm's and at 40% voltage on a motherboard header they ran about 600rpm iirc, not sure how accurate the 40% is though! I'm on a different motherboard now, and can't check the speeds but have both on a zalman fan mate at minimum and they are very quiet. If you have a controller that goes down to 5v and don't need silence (I can hear the fans now, at 1:15am... unless a car goes by 50m away on the road...) I would definitely recommend them - if you get a hot day there is plenty of headroom for additional cooling. If you have a raptor the little noise will probably be unnoticable  Mine are on thermochill radiators and on minimum there is noticable airflow, so I would say they can go anywhere - input and output have little resistance compared to a radiator.

As for customs, if they decide to check the package it is the standard 17.5% VAT plus a clearance fee, which was £8 on a £200 cpu I bought from USA along with a week delay! Not much fun...

Hello,

The voltage-to-RPM is not a direct ratio. It takes a minimum voltage to start a fan, and then it can be run at a lower voltage. I think the slowest a Slipstream can go is 350-400RPM; based on the 500RPM running at ~7v (and it won't start at 7v -- you have to help it get going!). The 800RPM can be run at 5v, and it too is about 400RPM I should think.

I have a Slipstream 1200rpm @ 75% (mobo control) and it's reading ~1050rpm. It's quiet enough. Just a little too much whoosh from the fan at 12v.

How about just undervolting a Yate Loon instead? That would be much cheaper and they are almost unnoticeable under 1000rpm.
