Antec Solo fan question

Post by lethul » Tue May 27, 2008 3:35 pm

Hi, im thinking about an Antec Solo. I want to have an 800rpm Slip Stream in the back and i want to have airflow over my HDs so i wanna have an intake aswell.

How is this one compared to Slip Streams in terms of cfm/sound ?

And does it fit ?

The Solo has great air flow through the HD area even without a front fan. My Solo is vented by a 120mm Nexus at 600RPM and an Modu82+ power supply fan at 460RPM. I run two Samsung HD501LJ's whose temperatures never exceed 35 degrees. I did cut out my rear grill and also discarded the HD mount unit.

That one has too many blades to clean. I use a 92mm Nexus at about 7V and can't hear it, also less blades to clean. 8)

Yep, I agree with the others, you'll be in pretty good shape with pretty much any quiet, slow moving fan. I have a Yate Loon at about 8 volts and it keeps my 2 HDDs at around 38 Celcius. Out of all of the cases I've worked with I'm tempted to say it has the best HDD airflow out of them all.

edit: I just wanted to clarify, I don't use an intake at all, just the 120mm Yate Loon in the rear and an Antec EarthWatts exhausting.

Yes you can fit ''one'' 100mm fan in the front, two will not fit together, and you can not fit a 92 w/ a 100. I have one 100mm in the front, and it does fine, I would recommend the lowest rpm model, I got the 2000rpm and even @ 5v it's the loudes in my case.

I just built a Solo for a client. The drives are two WD5000AAKS sata type. They are rubber grommet mounted behind a Panaflo 92mm 12H undervolted to 5v. This fan is virtually silent at 5v, but provide sufficient airflow for good cooling. These drives run in the 31~33C temp range. Ambient is 20~22C.

i have a Seagate 250Gb ( 36 degrees C ) and a Samsung 320Gb ( 29 degrees C ) suspended in the Solo, with 2x92mm Nexus in front undervolted to 7V, and one Nexus 120mm@800rpm in the back ( the Ninja runs fanless )...works great :D

Instead of doing that work to get 7V, you can buy a ready-made 7V resistor for around $2 dollars.

Yes, it is much safer using a zener diode in series with the fan.

that's work? :) there are users here mounting 2 motherboards in the same case so a simple mod like that can't be called work :P

anyway rereading that article, i can see the point regarding the 7V issue, yet around here ( Romania ) i'll have to build a circuit to do that

the 6V trick ( using 2 fans in series ) would be safer ?

The point is, for around $2 dollars you have it made. I am sure those who install two motherboards would gladly pay someone around $2 dollars to get it done.
