Tempted by the dark side...

Post by TheAtomicKid » Mon Jul 21, 2008 11:20 pm

Out of curiousity, has anyone on these forums ever experimented with high flow fans... say... deltas... alongside low voltage mods to run them at reduced speeds? Curious about the resulting sound levels...

www.sidewindercomputers.com (no I don't represent, naturally)

In particular, they've got some EXTREMELY high capacity 92's and 120's, that would normally tear your ears off and chew them up. From ten feet away, even. I was wondering, if you reduce the fan speed, would the high volume design end up grabbing more air with less noise, (or at least, ratio wise), compared to the fans we more normally experiment with.

Hello,

Generally no -- very fast fans have fewer and broader blades, since they are designed for high speeds. Slower fans generally have more blades and that tend to be narrower -- this works better at low speeds. Slow fans are much quieter at all speeds.

basically fans only run optimally in a small range of speeds, this is why variable pitch propellers were developed for planes.

I actually bought this little beast just for fun. It blows so much air that it floats a bit when laid on a table.

Deltas aren't meant to be undervolted and will be loud no matter what.

I was just looking at one of his spawn.

Thanks for the reality check, out of the cart it goes.

They are still great fun to just hold in your hands (either off or while wearing thick gloves).

It's a real shame that the 234CFM TFB1212UHE are no longer for sale any where. Imagine owning the most powerful 12V 12CM fan in the world!
