Building USB powered fan for desktop only laptop cooling?

Post by markyb » Fri Feb 26, 2010 1:09 pm

Sounds abit bizarre i guess but its a genuine question..

I posted a question about a Zalman NC 1000 cooler on here as it was abit on the loud side for me. Anyway @ £30 i thought it was a tad expensive for what it gave me.. that annoying sound..

So im planning on trying to make a sorta desktop rig. Buy a cheap laptop stand and hook up a quiet fan *size not known yet, comments appreciated* to a USB port where i can either control the speed or just have it on constant with some ducting to the underside vents of the cpu.

Guessing this should cost about £20 ish.. but im obviously abit concerned about the USB power bit and if it might pop one of my ports power?

I did see a tutorial via the net but wondered if anyone on here had any success with it?

Again comments appreciated

There are sources where you can buy such USB powered fans. In the US Performance-PCs.com has them I think. If you look around I would expect you should find something similar locally.

I made a USB powered fan some time ago.
It's really easy.

Fan has a black and a red wire. (and maybe another one for RPM sensoring but that's not needed. Cut it off)
USB cable has a black and a red wire.

Connect black to black and red to red and you are done.

It's that easy.

NOTE: Make sure the fan can start @ 5V

Now get to work !

Thank you both for the replies

I have since sold the Zalman notebook cooler at a slight loss. BUT im hopeful that this can now if nothing pave a way for this DIY build just for the desktop.

Again thanks for your comments. i'll set to work on getting some bits..

Any recommendations before a searching frenzy on size of fan and which you used AuraAllan?

I'm pretty sure I used a 120 mm 1200 rpm Scythe Slipstream.
Either that or it was a 1600 rpm version of the same fan.
