Need Replacement for Yate Loon 120mm

Post by bondiablo » Tue May 18, 2010 4:48 pm

For over 2 years I've been using (1) Nexus 120mm as my exhaust fan and (2) Yate Loon D12SL as intake and CPU fan. They're not totally silent but quiet enough and I find the type of sound they make innocuous. They've been running pretty much 24/7 and everything was fine until today the CPU fan, which is mounted horizontally, I know that's not ideal for this fan, started making a lot of noise. I'm probably just going to replace it with another Yate Loon but since it's been a couple years thought I'd ask if anyone had other suggestions? I need something that will cool the CPU at least as well as the Yate Loon on my Asus Triton 75 and I don't want to bother with undervolting or fan controllers. I've tried the Thermalright TR-FDB fans and a couple different types of Scythe fans including the Slipstreams but they all seemed much louder to me or made a more annoying type of sound.

Have you tried the Gentle Typhoon fans from Scythe? I find they are pretty good based on the 1,150rpm version I am using (undervolted).

Otherwise, the S-Flex fans from Scythe are also pretty good IMO.

Either of these fans has different models with a number of rpm speeds, so you should be able to pick one speed that matches your preferences.

It's been a while but I"m pretty sure I tried the S-Flex fans and didn't like them any better than the others. Never tried the Typhoons.

I really like the gentle typhoons, especially if used against something (radiator in my case). For free air you might be better off with something else, but for a heat sink....

OK, here are 3 fans I'm considering as replacements for the CPU fan. Anyone made direct comparisons between any of these fans and the Yate Loon D12SL-12?

Scythe Gentle Typhoon D1225C12B4AP-14 1450rpm
Noctua NF-P12 1300rpm
Noiseblocker BlackSilentFan XL2 1500rpm

I have both GTs and YLs. And, on a radiator, the GTs push much more air for the same noise. Heat sink should be the same.

Have you compared the noise from the 1450rpm GT to the 1350rpm YL?

I have all 3 speed Yate Loons, and have 1850 GTs on a fan controller. So no, not as such, however, I think at 1450rpm the GTs should sound about the same as YL at 1350rpm, but push more air. They are much better quality fans than YLs (at least, they feel like they are, much heavier, feel solid).

Sorry, I know thats not very scientific, but its what I've found! Hope it helps!

That said, the GT do have a different tone to YLs. I find it blurs into the back ground more easily, but YMMV, I think there is a thread here somewhere with people not liking the GTs.

The only thing I'd seriously consider replacing these with is some of the new low speed SanAce, which have pretty amazing specs (and SanAce aren't terrible with their specs).... but a price tag to match.

Thanks. I guess I'll order a Gentle Typhoon and another Yate Loon and see how it goes. After reading some more reviews I don't think I'll bother with the Noctua or Noiseblocker. If I could find a Sanyo Denki 9S1212L4011 I might try one of those but can't find anyplace that sells them in the US.

Yeah they are hard to find, and not cheap when you do find them. They look amazing.

The GT's have a pretty low starting voltage too, lower than the YLs seem to (using the highly scientific method of seeing how far round the fan controller knob is).
