Fan Orientation

Post by QuietPlease » Sun Jul 11, 2010 9:12 pm

I seem to remember reading that ball bearing fans are better than the scythe FDB fans if they are being used horizontally. Is this true? Or is it fine to use any bearing in any orientation?

I'm not clear if when you say "horizontally " if you mean that the shaft is horizontal or ...

Often a good quality fan will last longer than the owner prefers to use the computer.

Also:

I avoid ball bearing fans as some can deteriorate quickly and then shake-rattle-roll-scrape-screech and make other weird noises.

So far the scythe fans seem OK to me and the scythe FDB bearing units seem better than the cheaper plain sleeve bearing fans. I do recommend the gentle typhoon series for low vibration and the most non-annoying noise signature that I know of.
