Fans and 120mm to 140mm fan adaptors

Hi!

I want to fit a fan into my three 5 25" slots. There is space for a 140mm fan, but I could find only a 120mm frame for that purpose: http://www.sharkoon.com/?q=en/content/rebel9-fan-frame
I plan to use it on the INSIDE side of the 5 25 slot, so that the fan is closer to the VGA. I really like Silverstone's 140mm Air Penetrator and thought of using an adapter to mount it on the frame. The adapter looks like this http://www.caseking.de/shop/catalog/Fan ... 12716.html

So it will be like:
<=== 140mm Fan + 140mm to 120mm Adapter + 120mm Frame .......................................................... Mesh 5 25" covers.

I heard that the adapters do nothing good to the airflow, but since it will be on the intake side of the fan it should not be a big deal. Am I right? Or using just a 120mm fan will be better?

Thanks!

Another option would be to use a 140mm fan with 120mm mounting holes. Scythe makes some and they're available in Germany.

I have heard that 140mm to 120mm Adapters can make noise. I actually have one but haven't had the opportunity to use it yet.

I think if you have a 120mm opening and mount a 140mm fan on it, even a 140mm fan with 120 mounting holes, you are for sure going to get noise. How could you not?

I would expect that if you use the 140mm to 120mm Adapter and you run the fan slow enough, it won't make any additional noise. There won't be enough air current to make noise.

Yeah, I know about the fans with 120mm holes, but then the sides of the fan will be kinda covered with the fan frame? And I just really want an Air Penetrator - they are great at delivering airflow at long distances (what I want to use for cooling my VGA).

You mean mechanical noise or "air" noise because of the adapter? The air will be sucked in just through a slightly smaller hole. It is not a grill which greatly adds to the turbulence (or whatever that is). If necessary I could soft mount the things. Yeah, and I don't plan to run the fan on more than 800 rpm.

Soft mount would work, rig some elastic or rubber bands in there and save money compared to an adapter.

What about using long screws to move the fan further into the case?
