Quietest 80mm fan?

Post by Koolpc » Mon Oct 31, 2011 11:49 am

80mm fan needed. Must be very quiet but able to blow a nice amount of air. Any ideas?

BeQuiet Silentwings USC...and maybe the new Shadow wings and Darkwings.

Silentwings USC are better in my opinion than Arctic F8 and F8 pro, Zalman ZM-F1 FDB, Scythe Kama flow 2, Sharkoon Silent eagle SE and Coolink SWIF2...and that's all I've tested for the moment ;)

Did you check the SPCR recommended list? I use Enermax Enlobal (which is not on the list, I don't think).

We used to use a lot of 80mm fans, but virtually all quiet computers these days use 120mm or 140mm. The reason is that a quiet 80mm (or 92mm) cannot blow very much air, by definition. If you find a quiet fan, and it does not keep things cool enough, then you may want to find another way to get it cooler -- to improve air flow through passive means like cutting out a fan grill, etc.

A small addition : I've received a Nexus basic 80mm yesterday, a good fan, but in my opinion not as good as its 120mm brother, and not as good as the BeQuiet Silentwings USC.

In the past I used Enermax Enlobal fan too, but now I am not able to buy them anymore...

PS : Off topic, but I've learned that Nexus fan are made by 3 different factory, one for 80mm, another for 92mm, and a third for 120 and 140mm. Have someone ever try 140mm Nexus fan ?
PS 2 : No, I'm not a BeQuiet fanboy

The Nexus 80mm used to be my insta-buy quiet 80mm fan, but the more recent ones I've used haven't been good at all (those with the white fan blades). Which is a shame.

Mmm...do you know if the PWM version behaves better ? I know 120mm PWM is not that good, but I think 92mm PWM is smoother at low speed than 92mm "basic" (or my 92mm basic is a bad one) :?:

I purchased a few Yateloon 80mm fans for ITX/MATX builds. They're decently quiet, cheap when using 5V/7V trick. Truth be told, I can hear clicking noise if I listen to it very closely(probably 10mm), but it's noiseless when assembled in case.

I don't think it's wise to invest lots of money on 80mm fan when 120/140mm is modern trend...

I like the Enermax Enlobal 80mm fan:

And here's the Nexus:

I think either one will be quiet. If they don't move enough air, then cutting out the grill and using a wire one, and/or opening up the intakes of the case, should be helpful both for better cooling and making it quieter.

I have used the 80mm PWM Nexus fan. Think it is called the "Real Silent Case Fan." It was this real annoying hum or maybe growl would be accurate. I would not recommend this fan.
