Swap out fans?

Post by NyteOwl » Wed Aug 22, 2012 12:28 pm

Back again about my Slipstreams. I wrote last spring about some failing fans. Well a good cleaning and they're running again - albeit not at full speed.

I figure that it is a matter of time before the slow ones do reach an unuseable speed and the ones still running fien (2/5) start to slow.

I had originally considered replacing them (3 800rpm, 2 1200rpm) with equivalent speed Noctuas but someone suggested I use all 1450 rpm Gentle Typhoon's on a controller.(I'd have preferred 1150's but cannot find them anywhere.)

These would be going into a P182 as 2 front, rear, top and CPU fans. Higher speed in the front and CPU fans to maintain positive pressure.

Opinions welcome.

If my two GT 1450s are any indication, they work best as high-powered exhaust. As intakes, they created a funny noise that I don't hear when they're blowing air out of the case. And they move a lot of air out.

Gentle Typhoons are quiet at 800rpm but they do not undervolt well so buy the 800rpm@12v versions if you want quiet.

If your budget allow, consider also Noiseblocker NB-Multiframe M12-S1, i own 7, imo really good case fans, if you need more rpms there are S2/S3 version, in my case the S1 are more than enough for my server.

I would have preferred 800's and 1150's but I cannot find any of those speed models in Canada. Everyone only seems to stock the 1450/1850/3000 rpm models. If I want slower speeds I may have to go elsewhere for them.

No joy on Noiseblocker either.
