Hello,
I have bought a "silent" low profile cpu fan.
Unfortunately even with motherboard quiet fan control it does not go under 1800 rpm
I need a fan controller that reduces the rpms of that fan.
Can you help me?
Thanks,
Mario

Re: Reduce speed of 4pin cpu fan
An adpator won't work with a 4-pin PWM fan.
What CPU cooler have you got and what motherboard? It is possible that with different BIOS settings you could get it to run slower. 1800rpm is pretty fast by SPCR standards.
It could be that the cooler is not in good contact with the CPU. This would allow the CPU to get hotter and therefore the motherboard would raise the fan speed. What temperatures are you getting?
Have you tried using Speedfan? Maybe you can try to use it to lower the fan speed? It's not ideal but allows you to test the fan speed verus temperature.

list your hardware, at least motherboard and cpu cooler.
What motherboard header are you using? CPU_FAN, SYS_FAN, CHA_FAN?

Re: Reduce speed of 4pin cpu fan
Hello,
the hardware is quite old:
-motherboard asrock k10n78m
-case silverstone for home theather ultra short
-cooler alpenphoen panorama
-os ubuntu (not windows)
-used cpu fan
The cpu temp is under 40 and the fan goes at 1800 even when just poweredup.
I have also put three case fan (btw: an hint for a fan controller that has controls in pci bracket?)
Thanks again,
Mario

Re: Reduce speed of 4pin cpu fan
You could just try removing the fan from that heatsink and replacing it with something quieter. 1800rpm is fast and it could be that the motherboard also doesn't have good fan control in which can taking a standard DC fan and running it at 5V might be an alternative.

Re: Reduce speed of 4pin cpu fan
Hi,
following your suggestions I avoided bios control and used linux lm_sensors/pwmconfig/fancontrol.
Now there is an automatic configuration script and so setup is very easy.
Now my fan spins at 800 rpm as I read in the review of the cooler.
Thansk again!
