Fractal Design Dynamic Fan Series

Just wanted to let everyone know, I've just installed some new Fractal Design Dynamic GP12 and GP14 fans. The GP12 is the 120MM version and the GP14 is the 140MM version. Both are I'm glad to report very very quiet. And they also push a good amount of air. They feel really well built. And the price is right too. So anyone looking to add some nice quiet fans to their case should check out these new fractal fans....

Talking of Fractal Design fans I would have thought the Venturi series would have been more interesting, particularly the Venturi HP-14 PWM which has a nominal speed range of 400 to 1500 rpm and is supplied with a PWM Y cable. It also has a dual 120mm/140mm fitting implemented through the use of interchangeable corners. Hard to find in the UK presently where it has been advertised at £15. Newegg in the US have it for $22.

Looks like 1000 RPM is what they will do. So far very pleased with them. Just ordered one more 140MM one for the front of my Antec P380 case...

The most distinctive feature of the GP-14 is the notched fan blade. The last picture on this page from the SPCR R5 review clearly shows the notching. So there is no doubt that the black frame/white blades version of the Dynamic GP-14 is the stock fan for this case and as noted by yakuman also the Fractal Design S.

My concern about the Dynamic Fan series would be bearing quality. Fractal Design describe the hydraulic bearing fitted to this series as "...a cost-efficient compromise between a standard sleeve bearing and a true FDB bearing..." and only rate it as 40,000 hours MTBF. On the other hand the Venturi fans are stated to have "...true FDB-bearings..." which would be the design made by or licensed from NMB Matsushita (Panasonic) and this is reflected in the MTBF for this series which is 150,000 hours.

On the other hand, MTBF is probably a somehow overrated spec: in the last seven years I have lost just a single Slip Stream or Nexus (precisely a 100mm Kaze Jyu slim), which should be rated around 30,000hrs (some of them are over 50,000 and counting), and at any rate you (royal you) may also refill the bearing.

There's the chance the Venturi-series are even better than the R5 fans, but personally I've no concern about the Dynamic ones.

That's what the 140mm will run at 12V. What can you dial them down to with your MSI Z97 mobo?

Here's the RPM range of the stock GP14 in my Define R5. Placed on front, infront of it is the lower drive cage with a single HDD on the bottom and single SSD middle. Both side panels were off but shouldn't affect much?



Voltage of course extrapolated from the percent. No clue how inaccurate it is with my Maximus IV Gene-Z (Nuvoton NCT6776F).

For both I used AIDA64 and used it's average number. Went from 100%->20%. Perhaps I should have went the other way but I did wait for the average number for quite a while so the fan lost most of it's momentum it had before I lowered the fan speed. Of course clearing it a couple of times, first after min speed stopped dropping after I lowered the fan speed and again after 20-30s and took 10-20s average. Or something like that, I didn't time it.. No rounding.

P.S. I asked CoolingTechnique a while back if they'll be reviewing the Dynamic Series and if they had plans for the EK Vardar's. Their response:

Fractal fans are scheduled for July. For the Vardar instead, EK didn't reply to our emails so no plans in the near future. BR; Damiano.
