Potential winner: ATI Radeon X700 "hybrid"

They make noise, too.

Potential winner: ATI Radeon X700 "hybrid"

Post by meglamaniac » Tue Sep 21, 2004 11:41 am

Well, with the announcement of the X700 series, designed to compete directly with nVidia's 6800GT series, I can't help but wonder if we have a winner in the constant battle between silence and power.

For those who don't know, the X700 has roughly equivilant power to a 9800XT.
It has more vertex shaders, but a 128bit memory bus (verses the 9800's 256bit bus). Where it beats the 9800 is in clock speeds, where it is significantly faster.

Anyway, I have to wonder:
* Will Zalman come up with a passive cooler for this card?
* Will Arctic Cooling come up with a Silencer for it?

With regards to Zalman, they already offered their heatpipe cooler for 9800XT's. While this card is more powerful, it's also produced at a smaller micron level so should theoretically produce less heat than the 9800s - so a Zalman cooler should be possible if they think the market is there.

With regards to Arctic Cooling, the X700's GPU and systems are reported to be very similar to the X800's. Could this even mean that a Silencer designed for an X800 might fit?

If anyone's heard anything, here's the place to tell us!

The x700 may run passively.

From Toms Hardware
So far, only the most general technical specifications are available on the X700 and X700 Pro. Neither photographs nor early test samples currently exist. However, a small picture in an ATi presentation suggested that the X700 (standard version) can be cooled passively, meaning without a noisy fan, when used in a case conforming to the new BTX standard.

From ATIs blurb it looks like some versions (XT?) will have the 256bit GDDR3, and others (Pro, NP?) will have the usual.

The MegaGames blurb.

Techreport found the 6600GT to use less power than the X700XT.

The reviews that I have seem point to the X700 being slower than both the 6800GT and the 6600 series :(
