Loud high pitched noise from SMC 8508T Gigabit switch.

Post by Edwood » Fri Dec 03, 2004 3:10 pm

Just got a SMC 8508T Gigabit Switch.

It works fine, but it lets out a rather loud high frequency sound. It does not oscillate, it's constant.

For comparison, it's about 3 times louder than the high pitched noise from a CRT. It's really giving me a headache. :(

Is this normal? Or should I RMA this thing?

I have an SMC 8504T, and it does not make this kind of noise at all.

I have the same problem with a wireless router / adsl-modem.

My brand new (bought and installed yesterday) SMC7804WBRA wireless router / adsl-modem is completely silent. So if yours makes any noise, return it and ask for a new one.

Nice to have complete silence in that corner of the room. It replaced a Thompson Speedtouch 510, which transformer made a slight high pitched noise from the start. The modem itself started to make a fairly loud high pitched noise two month ago and yesterday it died.

Yep, I RMA'd it.

Hope the replacement is silent. Otherwise, I guess I will try dampening those vibrations.
