I want to get the Nexus 120 for a XP-120 but read that the "closed" corners require modding to fit. Add the fact that it's orange (ugly in my opinion) and the price, I think the Globe 120 would be a much better option for me. However, where can I find it? They're backordered at mnpctech.

Try coolcases.com
Just mail them if you can't find it on the site.

I don't know if this applies to 120mm, but my new 80mm Nexus fans all have open corners, unlike the old design. With the same quiet, smooth airflow.

Well, a hacksaw would fix the corners on the Nexus 120 but you would have to decide on the orange color. If you don't have a window in the case, just put the side back on.

Finding the Globe fans was hard from both homepages so here are the links:

Hrm... Would painting a fan kill its performance? I'm guessing yes... :?

You could paint just the casing, I think black and orange (like some thermaltake fans) looks alright. Probably the hub too, the paint should be much lighter than the sticker.

And two flowing in my case. No clicking on any of the 3 that I got from Directron.

Just use a hacksaw or dremel rotary tool (I prefer hacksaw) and saw off both sides of the closed corners and then use a pair of pliers and break off the middle piece that is now seperated from each corner and... VIOLA! Open corner fan! :D

i just put a nexus 120 on my XP-120 yesterday, with no modding to the fan at all. while it's not totally secure, it will definitely stay there as long as your PC isn't being moved around a lot. i seem to remember another poster saying the same thing last week.

Maybe I'm just blind, but I can't believe that nobody's mentioned this yet.

If you are handy/know someone with a milling machine, just mill off the closed screw columns. Thats what i had done with my 2 yateloons and it came out real nice. No burrs, looks almost professional and I have a flush surface so that getting an EAR mount in there should be without issue.

Of course, the hacksaw, pliers, dremel would probably much faster and practical for most people, but i just love the results of a nicely milled piece of equipment

Don't you have to use water and/or run it slower so as not to melt the plastic?

nexus + xp-120

Post by frankgehry » Mon Jan 17, 2005 8:52 am

The nexus + xp-120 is one of those combinations that you don't want to miss out on. In fact, I replaced my xp-90 so I could use the nexus 120. I was using a nexus 90 on the xp-90. Anyway, I have read articles about dyeing plastic instead of painting it. This was done on an optical drive cover and the results were very good. The dye comes in a spay cans. I would just get used to the orange. I followed Tibors instruction, but used an x-acto saw instead of the dremel, pulled out the pieces with my fingers, and then used an x-acto chisel blade and no. 11 to scrape and cut away the excess material followed by a small flat file. The motor is exposed so I used tape to keep the filings from getting in. Someone on the forum used a table saw and was able to get good results. It does take some time, but I never considered getting another fan. - FG

I can understand not wanting orange or cutting and filing so I'm sure the globe or other fans would be fine.

my rear 120mm fan is so close to the XP-120 that i am considering putting the Nexus as the rear case fan and running the XP-120 fanless. especially since my CPU is idling almost all the time (mostly run boring office apps).

I seem to remember seeing some pics posted by Edward Ng of a system in which he is doing this. Let me see... Ah, here's the link:

Linkage

So come on Edward, where's your article about this system?

I just started my new job today; full time, over hour long commute in both directions. I can't give an ETA on that anymore. :?

Bah! Excuses, excuses!

Just write one sentence a day - you'd be able to get it done in a few weeks!

I ended up ordering the Nexus anyway. Since both the Globe and the Nexus have closed corners, that diminishes the difference between them for me. Time to break out the hacksaw.
