Fastest card with stock fan below 40dBA?

They make noise, too.

Fastest card with stock fan below 40dBA?

Post by mattpwill » Mon Jan 17, 2005 5:31 pm

I'm after a card that's as fast as possible with noise at less than 40dBA. I don't want the added expense of modding unless the heatsink or whatever is futureproof with all future cards. I don't want to go close to the point of overheating. What are my options?

Thanks for any help.

Matt

I don't know how fast or how expensive you're willing to go, and what slot you're looking for the card to go in, but if it's AGP and your budget is anywhere around $220, the MSi NX6600GT-VTD128 is definitely under 40dBA, and faster than any of the previous generation's flagship models (FX5950 or 9800XT).

Thanks. I'm quite interested in heatsinks if they can be futureproof for about 5 years or so. Then I would get a good one. Are there any recommended ones?

I'm after AGP yes, if it offers value.

Unfortunately, there's nothing in the entire IT industry I can guarantee futureproof for a whole 60 months. Sorry.

The loudest component in my system is a Nexus 3500 power supply. Will I notice the MSI on top of that? In another thread you say it's like a silencer on high setting.

You will probably notice it.

Is there a motherboard available that supports Soundstorm and PCI Express grahpics?

Also, why don't people look at other manufacturers like Leadtek and Galaxy for the 6600GT, as they have almost the same noise output, but don't overheat as easily as the MSI?

Thanks.

There's a Gigabyte 6600 GT PCI-E passive (or it looks so). Available in the UK at tekheads for 118 GBP + VAT.
I'd like to know more about that card, only the front is visible in the picture.
The nForce4 mobos don't have SoundStorm, it wouldn't fit in the chipset.

I think I will stick with fanless 9100 until WGF comes out to replace directX.

That is the card I was talking about. There is no picture of the back. What if there is a noisy fan on the back (since it is 'Turbo Edition')?

From the reviews, it seems clear that the MSI 6600GT is an extremely quiet card but from a SPCR point-of-view, how quiet is it? Is the stock fan/heatsink solution acceptable for anyone here or is it still too loud? I really don't want to fiddle with heatsinks, heatpipes or other mods.

Right now, the loudest thing in my machine is probably the Antec SmartPower PSU (which will be replaced by the Enermax Noisetaker soon) and the 74GB Raptor. Will the MSI card be a lot louder than the PSU?

I was going to upgrade my fanless FX5200 to a fanless Radeon 9550 (Gigabyte) as I need DVI until I saw the Age of Empires III screenshots. This is one game that I'll HAVE to get but somehow I don't think a Radeon 9550 will be powerful enough.
