gigabyte 6800 overclocking makes chip run cooler?

They make noise, too.

gigabyte 6800 overclocking makes chip run cooler?

Post by Shaft0rz » Fri Feb 18, 2005 5:46 pm

Can anyone explain this to me? I've seem mention of it around, but I haven't seen an explanation why. In my case with no fans (only cpu and PS), at the default 325 core, it idles around 70. When I overclock to 380 core, the idle temps drop to 61. Can anyone explain it? Maybe something to do with drivers somehow?

What I've heard drivers over 70.xx will report too high temps. Haven't tried it out myself since I like to use the WHQL drivers. But I don't think this should affect the temperature when OC'ing.

Touch the heatsink when the card idles @350MHz and compare by touching it when it idles @325MHz. I'll try this too in a couple of hours.

My card is at 53°C when idle @350MHz using a vcore of 1.1V. It idles at 70°C @325MHz.

It spends less time generating heat at the higher overclock, as it does the same (simple) amount of work in less time when idle.

WHA? that makes no sense. Cards work constantly and don't idle and just make heat or am I going mad?

cpu (and gpu) workloads are intermittent with bursts of activity lasting microseconds and then idle periods larger than that. This has the appearance of being continuous but is not.

I doubt the GPU has to do much work when displaying the same screen when I just OC the card and notice the difference right away.

We are talking about a overclock of 25MHz that lowers the cards temperature by 10-20°C.

Perhaps I should OC my card with 100MHz and see idle temps around ambient ;)
