Looking for rubber/vibration damping case feet

Post by ET Awful » Wed Mar 09, 2005 11:25 am

I've seen the ones at QuietPC, but $6.75 for 4 adhesive rubber feet seems a bit expensive (especially after shipping).

Any suggestions for another source? I had thought of Home Depot, but there isn't one that's really close by.

So, I'm looking for a source for somewhat soft rubber feet to replace the plastic ones on my Compucase.

Thanks to any who have any ideas!

E

Mcmaster has some. I can't remember what page I saw them on. You need to be careful what durometer range you get (60 or 70). Too soft and they'll kinda ooze out from under your case.

I saw the ones at McMaster, but they seemed just a tad small diameter-wise (nothing over an inch really). I guess it would work, but I was looking more for something in the 1 1/2 inch - 2 inch range to match what was currently on the case. I guess it doesn't matter too much as long as they can support the weight.

Wow, I didn't know anyone lived further than 5 blocks from both a Home Depot and a Starbucks...

I think I would go with door bumper guards you can find at various hardware stores instead for the money, but if you want the best....

100% silicone caulk works great. You can make a mold with some tape or just dab some on the bottom of the case until it dries. You can also use it to isolate fans, PS's and other components.

You can use the extra to caulk your bathroom, windows, etc. Comes in clear, white, black, brown, and silver. Also works as an adhesive for most materials.

Since I'm going to buy some stuff from McMaster-Carr, I'm thinking about trying out a set of their "Adhesive-Backed Load-Rated Soft Bumpers" (the last item on
http://www.mcmaster.com/nav/enter.asp?pagenum=3474). They seem similar to QuietFeetfrom QuietPC. Out of the 8215K6, 8215K11, 8215K3, 8215K7, and 8215K12, which one do you think would be best for a "basic" SLK3000B system (average, nothing-fancy, 1HDD, 1DVD, etc.)?

I'm also considering 1" or 1.5" polyurethane foam "discs" (http://www.mcmaster.com/nav/enter.asp?pagenum=3303). Would these be more/less effective than the bumpers mentioned above?

Also, when using these bumpers or foam discs, do I have to worry about the weight of the case not being supported evenly in regards to keeping the HDD parallel or perpendicular to the ground?

I'd go for the 8215K7 or the 8215K12, probably the K12's.

I wouldn't use those. They appear to be regular open cell foam, and have a very, very low load rating.

Not if you position the feet symmetrically along each axis.

Thanks for the reply, Ralf! :D

I'd think the more cushioning material, the better, so I think I'll follow your recommendation for the 8215K12.

I just hope I don't end up with a "swaying" case as described in http://www.ripnet-uk.com/reviews/misc/q ... eet2.shtml. Either that or my system won't be heavy enough to compress the bumpers as much and my case would be perched up a bit. I guess as long as I don't accidentally knock the case and tip it over, I'll be fine...
