MOUSE whine?!

Post by Straker » Mon Apr 25, 2005 2:27 am

Anyone else have a Logitech MX510 (or any mouse, for that matter) that whines? Mine's making a really faint, really high-pitched whine/whistle, no idea if it did it out of the box or not. For a few weeks I thought it was my monitor getting worse, then I noticed the sound went away when I was holding the left button down. Haven't gotten around to opening the mouse up yet, just thought it was funny, there's hardly anything in a (computer) mouse to make any noise. Also interesting that it's not the actual clicking that changes the sound, the mouse cover or button inside seems to be putting pressure on whatever's making the noise.

DAMN YOU! I put my MX510 next to my ear and it does whine... Clicking the buttons changes the volume of the sound but to make it disappear i have to press hard, and if i press too much the whine gets stronger again... Is not audible if i dont put my ear right next to it though...

Same here... I seem to remember a thread about whining mice some time ago, but I haven't been able to find it though. Still, it's overwhelmingly inaudible compared to the invertor whine of my Sharkoon Luminous keyboard...

My Benq mouse (from the x805 combo) makes a whole host of noises. Most of them aren't heard over my PSU, but sometimes the whining is loud enough to notice. I think it might actually be faulty, since it seems to run through a pair of batteries rather quickly, and the red optical light is always flashing/blinking. Been too lazy to call tech support about it.

Thanks to you guys, my colleagues now think I'm a certifiable nutcase since I've been spotted with a mouse to my ear.

FWIW I can't hear any sound from the Logitech MX300. Have to try it with my MX310 at home.

I'd like to rant about how the MX500 series is for right handers only, but that'll be completely off topic, so this short sentence will have to do.

My MX300 at home whines! And so does my MX310.

Maybe the office environment was too noisy for me to hear the whine on my other MX300.

Fortunately I don't use the computer with my ear right against the optical sensor of the mouse.

Otherwise I can just see myself using a mouse with my hand stuck inside a padded wooden box. And before long they'd put me inside a padded box as well.

I am getting really paranoid because my MX310 is dead silent. Maybe I am going deaf.

Well, some people are more sensitive to high frequency sounds than others. And different samples probably vary as well. Wonder if the computer's USB port has anything to do with it.

Also, the whine seems loudest at the part of the label closest to the optical sensor, not the sensor itself.

Dammit, now the wife thinks I'm nuts. Remarks like "thats not a phone, you know" I don't need :-)

I have my MX310 mouse plugged into the USB hub built into my MS Natural Keyboard (won't quite reach to the computer USB port).

My MicroSoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 (can they come up with a longer name, please? Oh, and why is the wired version of the same mouse called 4.0?!) doesn't whine.

What it does is chirp. I can't hear it without holding it up to my ear, but every 2-5 seconds (it varies), it gives a little beep.

Nothing from my MX1000, that would suggest its from optical mice as the MX1000 is laser

Pfft, optical mice  I have an IntelliMouse Trackball from four years ago and still as silent as ever.

Kinda reminds me of when Scotty speaks into the mouse (randomly Googled link) when trying to input the formula for transparent aluminium into an ancient Mac in "Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home"... "Hello, computer!". Or am I showing too much geek-ness now?

Sadly, this was the first thing that crossed my mind too.

Neither my MX900 nor my girlfriends MX700 whines. This doesn't say you are wrong, though.

My MX 510 whines.

And with some practice and dead silence, I can hear it from an arms length away. This is getting really annoying.

My mx510 whines too.

Btw, that "some people are more sensitive to high frequencies" kind of means some people are more deaf than some others, doesn't it? I mean, think about the definition of it?

It's all relative. Your uncle is more deaf than your aunt... ( ) but it's true (not the uncle/aunt), people get exposed to loud sounds, hearing is slightly damaged in different ways.

Range also deteriorates with age - I can hear much higher pitched tones at 16 than my physics teacher at ~35. Unfortunately I can hear my CRT whining now, and it'll be obsolete/broken in much less than 20 years!

No sound at all from my wireless intellimouse explorer. And I can hear to at least 18kHz, so it's not just that I'm deaf.

My brand-new Logitech MX518 mouse has a high-pitched whine. I can hear it distinctly if I move my head close to the mouse. At arm's distance, I can still hear it faintly... :(

I have a Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 USB and it was making a faint, but high-pitched sound that I could hear through my headphones whenever I scrolled the wheel up and down. I reinstalled my sound card drivers(SB Audigy 2 ZS) and the problem went away.

I just held my Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 to my ear and I can definitely hear a high pitched whine when the LED is at full power. Of course it is inaudible when it is not next to my ear.
