Buying a thermalright xp-120 and thinking about pairing it up with a nexus fan because of how quiet it seems to be. My only concern though is that it might not be effective at cooling a cpu (AMD 3700 San Diego). Opinions?

I could cool my P4 2.8 Prescott wit a XP-120 and a Nexus 120mm fan. That proc was way hotter than yours is.

It depends entirely on what CPU temp you are willing to accept. That Nexus runs at 1000rpms. The airflow at that rpm is lower than most 120mm fans. There wil be no margin for error at max CPU usage.
I prefer a fan that can spin faster if conditions demand it....

A Nexus 120/XP-120 cools my Prescott 3.0E (OC'ed to 3.3) to ambient +25C , running FAH 24x7. I built a PC for my wife with a 3200 Winchester, XP-90 and Nexus 92. Her temps are superior in all regards to my P4 (also running FAH 24x7).
XP-120 and Nexus should handle your San Diego just fine.

alright, i'm just gonna go for the nexus as i just can't seem to find a site that has both heatsink and fan at a reasonable price like jabtech does with the xp120 and nexus.
thanks for the help guys. if anything, i'll just get another fan down the road if I do end up overclocking.

You should get a yate loon D12SL-12 from
www.tekgems.com. Max rpm 1350 plus more cfm than nexus at equiv. speeds. They are essentially the same fan however.

If I had the money, I would use a Nexus 92mm fan and a XP-90 on a Pentium D 830. There's no doubt in my mind you will be fine with a 3700+ and a Nexus 120mm fan on a XP-120, even when slightly overclocked.

Hello:
It'll be more than enough at 12v! I used an XP-120 and a low speed Yate Loon at 800-850RPM's on and Athlon 64 4000+ (Newcastle) and even at full load (Folding@Home) it stayed below 50C.
