This site recommends 160gb samsung HD (Samsung SP1604N).. what about their 250gb model? Incidently I'm having a real problem trying to find the 160gb model with a Nidec motor, they all seem to have JVC. Any ideas guys? I'm in England.

Incidently, what is the difference between the SP1604N & SP1614N?

Cache size for SP1604N is 2MB, the SP1614N got 8MB.

And does anyone know how to tell which motor is in the SP1614N? When asking which (JVC or Nitec motor) was printed on the bottom, a stockist here in england (misco.co.uk) tells me:

"I have asked our warehouse to have a look at the product for you, but
unfortunately there isn't anything like you described."

Dabs seem to have good prices on Samsungs at the moment. I got a SP1614N from them a year ago which was a NIDEC, in fact all 5 of mine are NIDEC's. I know I got some from Oevrclockers as well.

I'd expect the 250Gb is fine as well, I keep thinking about geting one, although my recent hard drive purchases have been laptop drives.

It was just my imagination that saw "Nidec" printed there on the motor.

forget 3.5" drives, I came into a little bit of money today so I've decided to buy a 2.5" drive instead. Is it me or does this seem like a very very good price for 2.5" 80gig drive?

ht*p://www.misco.co.uk/productinformation/~755 ... 0Drive.htm [hi admin sorry not sure if links are allowed?]

We're talking £65 (+£5 delivery) for 80gigs. Considering that 100gig 2.5" drives are £100 and above, that seems a great price! It seems to be the double platter version of the quiestest 2.5" HD this site recommends (MK4025GAS), so perhaps I'm safe to assume its going to be pretty silent too?

I'm hoping to order it tonite, so if anyone has any words of wisdom before I swipe my credit card through the interweb, please speak now or forever hold you peace. Thanks guys! =]

They are assuming they're not insanely long. You can tell if it's insanely long by hitting preview on the reply screen. If it's more than 3/4s the width of your preview screen, consider embedding the link:

I have a 160GB Spinpoint and it is very quiet. It has been said that the newer 250GB may not be as quiet as the older models. Check out this thread, New Samsungs no longer quiet. I wish SPCR could review these newer Spinpoints and do a comparison. I too am interested in a 250GB.

I'm very happy with my Nidec 250 (2504C).

granted, it went in as the third drive in the system so my baseline is a bit higher than I'd like, but it's definitely MUCH quieter than the two Seagate 120s surrounding it and much cooler too. I couldn't compare it to my 160 (too much trouble) but subjectively i'd say the noise is about the same.
