Best cooler for Nvidia 7800gtx?

They make noise, too.

Best cooler for Nvidia 7800gtx?

Post by dxxjai888 » Mon Nov 21, 2005 10:38 pm

Hi I recently bought a Nvidia 7800gtx and I was wondering if the Zalman VF700-CU would be sufficient for this card. I know theres a post about it being ok for the 7800gt but since the 78000gtx card runs a bit hotter I just wanted to make sure.

I use the NV Silencer 5 Rev.3 on my 6800GT, although it was designed for the 7800 series (i.e. Asus 7800GTX Top), and I've experienced excellent results. However, from what I gather from Thermalright (biased source, true), their new V-1 Ultra will be the best VGA cooler on the market. The problem is that the new V-1 Revision will not be available for another couple of weeks.

Just to let you know the 7800GTX's stock cooler is just fine the way it is - I've had mine for the past few months and I've never heard it ramp up. It's extremely quiet, but then again on the other hand this is winter... however after playing 6 hours of BF2 seeing the temps go to about 60 C I've enver heard it ramp up still...

EDIT: I ordered a 512 MB 7800GTX... will let you guys know how that cooler fares ;P

I havent tested te new card yet, just received the stuff today. but ive also heard that the stock fan is pretty quiet but I never had much faith in stock coolers. Ill give it a shot if its too loud ill probably look into the new thermalright cooler. Thx alot for the info.

I'm thinking about ordering the 7800GTX-512 too. Hope you get yours soon so that we can soon get some comments on how quiet it is :)

OTOH I'll probably order it anyway, no matter how noisy it is out of the box 8)

I put a VF700 on my 7800GTX and it's definitely quieter than the stock
cooling, and it's running cooler than before.

And so I did :D Well, actually I pre-ordered it. It'll be a week before the stores get them over here... :(

Go here, and do this mod.

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview ... erthread=y

I tried this after using a VF700, and it keeps the card just as cool as the zalman, but it is sooooooo much quieter. And I even used a fan that isn't sold as a quiet product.

Great mod that costs nothing if you already have a fan you want to use.

the stock cooling on the 7800GTX is utter crap, have you ever looked at the TIM on the inside? Its like white crap with threads in it.. really cheap. Only the gpu has proper paste.

Yeah. It is really crappy product. I replaced all the thermal paste with AC ceramique before I modded my card.

It's too bad that it adds width to the back side of the card :( My A8N32 motherboard is already PCI-slot-challenged...there is only 1 slot that can be used without interfering with the air flow for the GPUs and I already have an audio card there... the V-1 Ultra would wipe-out that slot...the NV 5 Rev. 3 seems to be my best option.

I know it's a good cooler but how quiet is it? My BFG 7800 GT cards are noisier than GTXs. I can't even hear my noisy CPU HS fan over their racket :)

This is my first step in trying to eliminate noise..the CPU will be next.

Cisco. Saw your A8N32 posts at Xtremesys. Good to see that you're also hanging around here. Seems like we got similiar taste so... why not meet and stuff? No? :( well...ok...cool.. ;)

I'm thinking of a Nv silencer for my lower 7800gt and a actively cooled Vm-102 for the upper card. My concern is the quality of the Nv fan...
