Apparently the seal, which goes at the seam between the top and bottom halves of the PSU, gets broken sometimes when the shipping package is dropped or the PSU gets twisted in some way.
This seems highly unlikely. Any twist sufficient to break that seal would have ripped the top off.
Yes, I agree. The power supply is as structurally solid as a brick. It can't twist. Also, my supply came pre-installed in a P150 case, so there is no way the seal could have broken by being "dropped."

I believe that Antec opened it at the factory to do a fix in the production run and did not put on a new sticker. This is not a good practice because it now looks like the consumer opened it, voiding the warranty.

PS: My Asus motherboard has the latest 1009 BIOS version, so that did not cure my problem with the PSU. :(

I swapped my parts from the P180 to the P150 tonight, and the Neo seems to work. Been folding for a couple of hours now.

Neo HE 430, SN S05060004078

DFI nF4 Ultra-D
3500+ Winchester
2x512Mb RAM
X800GTO@575/530(400/500)
WD Raptor74
Maxtor MaxlineIII 250Gb
LG DVD-RW

And as for noise im very positively surprised, its damn quiet and smooth.

I just received my P150 tonight from Newegg. The warranty seal was also broken along the opening. It's pretty obvious that this was not "accidental" due to shipping, the box was in perfect condition and every item in the case was still secure and nothing showed signs of being jostled. Maybe it was due to handling on their end, I don't know. The first thing I did was take some pics with my digital camera so I'd have proof it arrived like that.

I have no problem with Antec opening the case to fix the PSU (in fact, I hope they did), but it would have been nice if they resealed it. I assume Newegg wouldn't go opening items up like that, unless instructed by Antec to perform some kind of fix.

I will test it out with my Asrock motherboard when it arrives later this week. *Fingers crossed*

Neo He 430 does work with ASUS P5WD2 Premium

Post by howardyu » Thu Jan 05, 2006 8:58 pm

Last month I ordered two P150/ASUS P5WD2 Premium/P4 830 from a local campany. Today the technician who is assembling my systems told me that Neo He 430 will not boot both system. He suspected that +5V line is too weak (only 14A) and a non ame ps 350W can boot my systems because the +5V line is 32A. BTW both Neo He 430 have broken warranty stickers and Antec will not take them back for credits/trade in to buy other Antec PS.

So the accessment in http://www.silentpcreview.com/article273-page5.html#ps2
saying that the revised units fix the problem
imay not be right.

I do not know what I will get if I send them for replacement. Will the revised one have more +5V amp line?

howardyu -

That motherboard does not need more than a few amps on the 5V line to boot -- or at any time. The problem has nothing to do with the current capability on the 5V line; it's something else altogether. Just RMA the things and give Antec a chance to make good.

(Your tech is not uptodate on modern Intel board requirements for power -- it's Intel who writes the specs, and their latest ATX12V v2.2 says the +5V line does not need more than 14A max for a 450W PSU. Our own power distribution tests on 6 different motherboard/CPU systems (incld. Intel dualcore and 3.8GHz processors) showed actual power draw to be under 4A on the 5V line under full load for any of these systems -- http://www.silentpcreview.com/article265-page3.html )

Thank you for clarifying, MikeC.
The company I ordered my systems is an authorized dealer of intel. Here is part of message:
*******
Both existing power supplies (Neo HE 430W PSU's) unfortunately are
having problems with this configuration.

The system with the two hard drives completed POST, would hang during
installation of Windows XP, and was not recoverable, and the system with
the single hard drive would start to POST but wouldn't complete.

I replaced the NeoHE 430 with a generic-ish AcePower 400/350W PSU and
the machines worked without issue. The first system successfully
installed Windows XP the first attempt (compared to 10 attempts
previously when it would hang during "Detecting devices - 34 Minutes
remaining"). After comparing the MAX CURRENT rating line-by-line
between the two power supplies, it was then established that the
problematic line is the 5V - the NeoHE's are 14A, while the working PSU
is rated at 32A. The replacements I've suggested carry 32A ratings on
*****

It is interesting to see if Neo HE 430 has any problem with intel 955 MB. Anyway I order two Seasonic S12-430HB to replace Neo HE 430.

3 Antec Neo HE 430's fail to power system

Post by cville22 » Fri Jan 06, 2006 1:03 pm

This is a significant update to my December 27 posting, adding new information and summarizing results.

Here's the email I sent to Antec Support at the request of Antec in The Netherlands after my 2nd Antec Neo HE 430 failed to power my system:
System: P150 case with the standard Antec Neo HE 430 PSU, ASUS-VM-CSM board [with the latest BIOS; 0506 - November 29, 2005], AMD X2 3800, 2*1Gb Kingston memory, 3*Samsung SP2004C drives. Other than a DVD writer there are no additional components such as graphics boards, etc.

Behavior: the system will not start up with more than one disk drive connected. If more than one drive is connected, the fans spin for 1 or 2 seconds and the system goes dead. As soon as the additional drive is disconnected [after power down of course], the system is fully functional.

The next day the system didn't power up at all, even with a single drive. I then disconnected the drive, let the PC be powered up for a minute or so, switched off, reconnected the drive and this time it did start up [with 1 drive]. It seems that the PSU will support a single drive after a brief warmup and none after a cold start, hinting at an overly sensitive protection mechanism. Please note that this may be new information as I have not encountered this behavior in any of the forum postings.

Today I received the replacement which shows exactly the same behavior. As I'm dependent on using this PC with at least 2 drives , this problem means I cannot use it as I cannot configure it. To test the system I have put XP on a single drive and I can confirm that the system seems to be fully functional.

A few days later I received the following reply:

I just received a feedback from our power supply engineer regarding this matter. Basically, the latest version of the NeoHE should work with your motherboard. He is suspecting that the one we sent you was an old version. That said, what we can offer is to send you another replacement.

As with PSU #1 and PSU #2, PSU #3 failed to power the system; all 3 exhibited exactly the same behavior.

Serial #s: [positions #2-5 indicate manufacturing YYMM, e.g. 0510 = Oct 2005]

- Antec Neo HE 430 #1 S05100035695
- Antec Neo HE 430 #2 S05120140703
- Antec Neo HE 430 #3 S05120140699

Note that #3 is actually OLDER than #2 but given the fact they're only 4 serial #s apart makes it hard to believe that they would behave differently which unfortunately turned out to be the case.

Today I purchased a Seasonic S12 430W. It was quite a challenge to remove the Antec and replace it with the Seasonic [tight fit] and the Seasonic's cables are not as nice as the Neo's. There's one essential difference though: The Seasonic actually supplies power to the system! What a concept!

I'm now writing this post on my new machine which has been happily folding for several hours now.

Remains the task of returning the Neo's to Antec and requesting a refund.

Thanks everyone for sharing so much useful information :D

HE 430 Works Fine

Post by bobalooza » Fri Jan 06, 2006 6:00 pm

I purchased a P150 from SecureMart.com that arrived just yesterday. I attempted to retrieve the date that it was originally shipped to SecureMart but the Watkins tracking number was no longer valid. Although this case was purchased for my kids’ computer, I decided to try the PSU on mine for the sake of this poll.

SN: S05110048646

"Warranty void if removed" label is torn/broken.

My system specs are as follows:

Asus A8N-E Rev 2.00 (BIOS Rev 1008)
A64 3200+ Winnie (stock) with CnQ enabled.
Corsair XMS PC3200 2 x 512MB (2-3-3-6)
Gigabyte GV-RX80L256V (ATI X800XL)
SB X-Fi Platinum
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 200GB (IDE, 7200 RPM)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST3200822AS 200GB (SATA, 7200 RPM) x2 (RAID 1)
Lite-On DVD
Lite-On DVDRW
Mitsumi Card Reader / Floppy
T-Balancer

I initially booted into a secondary Win XP install without the 2 Seagates attached. There I ran Prime95 for an hour. After that I ran Prime 95 & RTHDRIBL for nearly another hour. I experienced absolutely no problems. This gave me enough courage to attach the RAID drives and boot into my primary Win XP Pro install.

So far so good. I'll be playing America's Army for several hours tonight. If I experience any shutdowns I'll update my post, but otherwise assume all is good.

I purchased an Antec P150 case from newegg and upgraded to a P4C800 Deluxe motherboard I had on hand. I have continually experienced random shutdowns since the upgrade two weeks ago. I have been trouble shooting the problem doing several clean installs of Windows, disconnected devices, used ASUS Probe, and have come to the conclusion that it is either the Antec Neo HE 430 power supply or the motherboard. The motherboard has the latest BIOS 1019. Reviewing the Asus Probe log after a shutdown showed no abnormalities in power fluctuation.

I just swapped out the Neo HE 430 with an Antec True 430 from an old Antec case I have and will monitor for system shutdowns. Previously, with the Neo HE 430 installed, my system stayed up and running for two days without incident.

I really like the P150 case but replacing the power supply after the system is built, is a big pain. I also like the Neo HE 430 modular power connectors, it keeps things nice and neat. Too bad there are issues with it.

Neo HE 430 s/n: S05100031120 w\broken seal
Asus P4C800 Deluxe /BIOS 1019
3.2GHz P4EE
OCZ 1GB 2x512 3200
ATI X800XT
Hauppauge WinTV PVR 500
74GB WD, 250GB WD, and two 400GB WD in Raid 0
Plextor DVDRW
Plextor CDRW

I will post updates, if any.

*****UPDATE***** 1-24-06*****

After swaping out the Neo HE 430 power supply the system was up for three days before I started experiencing shut downs again. So, I purchased a new ASUS P4P800 E Delux motherboard and installed it with the Neo HE 430 power supply. I have not had any further issues with my system shutting down for over a week now and believe the original ASUS P4C800 Delux motherboard was the problem. Good luck to all who have issues with the Neo HE power supplies. I would still like to know why the seal is broken on my power supply. Hmmm....

Works, but bad fan

Post by BluesJunkie » Mon Jan 09, 2006 10:13 am

I have had the PS in my Antec P150 for about a month now running in this config:

ASUS A8N-SLI (not delx or prem.)BIOS 1011
Windows XP SP1
AMD XP 64 4000+ Runing at 2640 with stock cooler @37C
2x512 Corsair XMS 3200
3x36 GB Fujtsu U320 SCSI in raid0 (112MB/s on PCI bus) :D
Single original case fan
Lite on 1633 DVD Burner
2x GF4 6600GT in SLI (FEAR, DOOM3)
Folding 24/7

I have had none of the power issues that others have experienced, and in my opinion has been a great unit.

I do have an annoying, "I am gonna die soon" buzz/vibration coming from the PS fan that has gotten increasingly worse. I am ordering a fan to replace this nuisance. I figure it will be about the same cost as return shipping without all the hassle.

PSU DOA (P150 case bundle)

Post by MK-ULTRA » Mon Jan 09, 2006 3:46 pm

Just brought home a P150 case with bundled HE430 (s/n S05090018811) PSU and an ASUS A8N32-SLI mobo. No luck whatsoever getting juice from the PSU, even with absolutely nothing non-essential slotted/plugged-in. Thing appears to be a paperweight right out of the box.

I have a Giga-byte 7VM-400AM with F6 bios and suffered no problems when I connected the NeoHE 550W to the system.

My problems began however when I installed a Zalman vf700-cu VGA Cooler and tried to run it in quiet mode. When the vf700 is plugged into the 5V connector, I get the system to turn on, power to the fans (CPU and vf700) but no boot sequence. No probs when I plug it into the 12V supplied connection.

Further I removed the Neo and refitted the old 300W generic miniPSU and no problems. vf700 works in both 5V and 12V connections.

Have information request lodged with Antec. Waiting for reply.

PSU Serial No: S05110074213 bought in Melbourne Australia at Computer Parts Land. My seal is neat and unbroken.

I just got my P-150 today and will be building it over the next few days. SN on the PSU is S05090020107, bought from Kustom PCs in the UK. It will be running a Gigabyte GA-8ITX with P4 Willamette and RDRAM.

Now the SN is reported, I can throw away the bit of paper and forget about it. Fingers crossed it will work okay.

This has me worried. I've been using a NeoHE 430 with a P4P800DLX and experiencing no problems. I'm planning on installing a Zalman vf700 AL/CU on the video card and running in silent mode. Has anybody else successfully run the NeoHE 430 and the Zalman at 5v?

Antec 430 HE working flawless

Post by scoby » Tue Jan 10, 2006 8:47 am

Case: Antec P180
MB: MSI K8N Diamonod
CPU: Athlon 64 3500+
Graphics: 7800 GT
HDD: 2 x 200 Gb RAID 0

Everything works fine, the PSU has additional cooling due to the low 120mm case fan behind it blowing trough the rear side and the fan produces no noise at all.

Hasn't failed: just doesn't work with 3 out of 4 of my PC's!

Post by ppspcr » Tue Jan 10, 2006 3:39 pm

Neo HE 430 Serial No. S05100027679

A friend of mine recently bought a P150 case with the NeoHE430 installed. The PSU wouldn’t work with his ASUS A8N motherboard, so he RMA’d it. However, he couldn’t wait to build his PC so went out and bought a Seasonic S12-600.

When he got the RMA replacement, I bought it off him, still sealed in cellophane. It seemed slightly ‘grubby’ when I opened it (fingerprints all over it) and I noticed that the warranty seal was broken. When it didn’t work, a quick search bought me to this website/forum.

My system comprises an Asus A7V8X with an AMD Athlon XP 2400, Nvidia Ti4200, Creative Audigy soundcard and a couple of hard drives. The PSU gives a spurt of power and switches off immediately – just enough to start spinning the CPU + PSU fans. I gradually removed components, but even with nothing but the CPU plugged into the motherboard (and CPU heatsink and fan, of course), there is no change. Three or four other PSU’s I have to hand including an Antec True 330P, all manage to power each system ok.

I tried the NeoHE430 with a couple of other PC’s as follows:

PC1 – HP D530 P4 2.66 – Fans spin for a couple of seconds

PC2 – Advent (PC World) PIII Celeron 1.3GHz – Fans spin for a split second.

PC3 – Gateway PIII 1GHz – Works perfectly!

The motherboard’s on these 3 PC’s are generic/OEM Intel based boards without manufacturers’ branding but I don’t have time to cross reference the various OEM part numbers at the moment.

Labels:
I don’t believe the account given to Mike C by Antec about the warranty labels splitting in transit. My unit is very firmly put together and I can’t get any movement between the two sections bridged by the label. The label is positioned adjacent to a ‘lug’ which holds the PSU casing tightly together and any force sufficient to cause the label to split, would destroy the PSU never mind the packaging!

As mentioned previously, my PSU definitely looks like it’s been handled and closer inspection even reveals a couple of scratches on one of the screws!

Conclusion:
I wonder just how stringent Antec (or their agents or subcontractors perhaps) are with their QC. Either way, warranty replacements, at least, should be checked more thoroughly.

Whatever checks are being carried out are not very effective and it seems to me they are not too sure about the exact problem. Why else would they send faulty/incompatible PSU’s out as replacements, especially when they know the user has a ‘problem’ motherboard?

If anyone at Antec wants a couple of old motherboard’s that their PSU doesn’t work with, I’m open to reasonable offers!

Finally, my dilemma. Do I run my main system with a slightly noisier PSU or do I use the tired old 1GHz Celeron Gateway with my shiny new (read used and botched by Antec) Neo HE 430?

John

PS. Anyone got a quiet CPU cooler for a 1GHz Celeron? :)

Hello SPCR, long time lurker first time poster. Figured this was the place to make my grand entrance, seeing as how I have just bested the NeoHE.

I got my NeoHE along with a P150 from Newegg from the 10-05 batch, and the supply refused to hold power for more than a second on my DFI Lanparty nf3 250gb. This was obviously frustrating, but Antec tech support actually kinda pointed me in the right direction. By unplugging the 12v connector and just using the 24pin plug, I managed to boot and maintain power to my system.

EDIT: Disregard. Turns out my DVD drive causes the PSU to cut out upon cold boot, though after allowing the PSU to run for a short time with it unplugged I can reboot to my hearts content with no issues. Is it possible that the DVD just pushed the supply over the edge, and a lower power model would fix it (assuming one exists)? The drive is a lite-on tray loading DVD-ROM, that's all the info I've got on it.

Antec P150 with ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe Dont work

Post by savenlid » Fri Jan 13, 2006 8:56 pm

Just did buy from Frys in CA San Jose (last week)

First didnt boot at all, just shook the fans a little.

Then booted and turned off after 10-15 min

As you understand that when you have all components new its not easy to understand whats the problem.

But google soon described the problem.

I havent talked to antec or Frys.
Antec hompage wont even load. Its dead. as is the supply.

What to do ???

Post by savenlid » Fri Jan 13, 2006 9:13 pm

As i posted and many before me the Antec HE430 is a piece of crap.

I will not bring this to the post office , beacuse i am to lazy.
I will take a hit, a loss. (And antec knows most of us will)

But now to the really big problem, where i need help.

What power supply should i get instead ?

Remember, i want a silent one, to whole point with Antec P150.

S,

The p150 must be a nice case though. Anyway, what other components are you building with and how much power do you want? I would still contact antec - you have to open a trouble ticket on their web site. They should at least send you a replacement or possibly a different model. The antec smartpower 2.0 500w would be a good substitute.

You should also check the recommended psu list on the home page under sections. Here's the link:
http://www.silentpcreview.com/article28-page6.html

You should start your own thread. I'm sure the moderators will move these posts out of the poll. - FG

In early December I picked up a Neo HE 430, Serial 05090010085, to use in an Antec P180 case for my HTPC.

My HTPC motherboard is currently an Asrock 775Dual-915GL (MicroATX Prescott motherboard) and 3.0ghz Prescott, chosen because I couldn't get the Neo HE 430 to start any of my Athlon motherboards that didn't require the 4-pin header.

The Asrock motherboard gets the symptoms described here - It will sometimes not start, and when it does it will only run for at most one minute. My old Enermax 365 powers it just fine, as does the 220w supply in my Antec Minuet mATX case.

So I junked that idea and put the Neo HE 430 on my Athlon 64 rig - Asus A8N-SLI, AMD 3000+, EVGA 7800GT, Maxtor 250gb SATA, Pioneer DVR-110.

I tried installing windows 4 times. 2 of those 4 times, the machine powered off in the middle of Windows setup while formatting the Maxtor drive. Once windows was running, the machine would power off the instant I started any 3d application.

This power supply doesn't put out anything anywhere near 430watts. The only way I could run 3d applications on that computer using the Neo HE supply was to hook a second power supply to the 7800GT. Right now it's sitting on my bench as I try and find the receipt to take it back. I may contact Antec about it instead, as I bought it for how quiet it was in the first place.

*Edit*

On second thought, after reading this thread through, returning it for something else might be a better idea. :( Also, at one point when I was initially testing my A64 setup, I'd had a second Evga 7800gt in that computer - connected but not enabled for SLI. When I finally got past the power supply issues by buying an Antec Truepower II 550w, it turns out that my second card was defective. I returned that as well, and the guy at the store commented that he'd never seen a bad 7800 before. It didn't mean much at the time, but I'm wondering if the Neo HE 430 had anything to do with that?

Now the SN is reported, I can throw away the bit of paper and forget about it. Fingers crossed it will work okay.
I got the system up and running this morning and all seems to be well.

System is:

Gigabyte GA-8ITX
P4 2.0Ghz Willamette
1 gig Samsung RDRAM
Samsung SP0802N
Maxtor 6Y120L0
Lite-On LDW-411S DVD writer
GeForce Ti-500

I haven't done any stress-testing but it seems pretty solid from browsing and emailing. It's a bit of a lottery though and that is not really acceptable.

Failure with Antec NeoHE 550

Post by strife_endurer » Sun Jan 15, 2006 2:56 am

PSU: Antec NeoHE 550
Serial: S05110077877
Purchased from ZipZoomFly.com on 01/09/2006

Motherboard: ASUS A7N8X Deluxe, PCB Rev 2.0, BIOS 1008

AMD Athlon XP 2000+
Western Digital WD600BB 60 GB (PATA) HDD
Samsung SP1213C SATA 120 GB HDD
TSSTcorp TS-H552B DVD+/-RW
Plextor Premium CD-RW
ATI Radeon 9500 Pro

I purchased my Antec PSU to replace my Coolmax AP-550X (CX-500B) PSU. However, upon power-up, the system only managed to boot into Windows once. After rebooting, it failed to POST and it didn't seem that the hard drives were properly spinning up. The CPU fan and PSU fan were running, but was about it. The optical drives' LEDs lit, but didn't respond to me pressing the eject button. The system would stay on for about a minute before deciding to power itself off. There was also nothing on the screen noting any errors--in fact, the screen was blank. I didn't even get a verbal warning from ASUS Post Reporter. Repeated powering off and trying different outlets didn't make a difference. I plugged in my old Coolmax PSU and it works just fine.

Being a weekend (Sunday), I simply called and left a message for Antec. However, I will be calling tomorrow to see about this issue.

UPDATED 2006-03-05:
After talking to Roscoe at Antec back in January about this issue, they sent me a replacement NeoHE 550 (S/N: S05110084287) which had the same results. So I ended up sending the replacement back in exchange for a TruePower 2.0 550W PSU. This PSU works just fine and I'll be sticking with this one. The interesting thing is that both NeoHEs and the TruePower 2.0 I currently have are all missing the -5V lead...yet the TruePower 2.0 PSU works without a hitch. Hmm... Anyway, I think the NeoHE has potential, but for the time being I'll be staying away from that particular model until they work the bugs out of it and/or I get with the program and upgrade my mobo to something that will be probably using the new AMD Athlon 64 X2, PCI-E and other new stuff...

Failure with Antec NeoHE 550

Post by jfreuler » Sun Jan 15, 2006 10:28 am

Another thumbs down for the Antec NeoHE series.

Antec NeoHE 550
s/n 05090010615
warranty seal is intact

MSI K8NGM2-FID mATX (nVidia 430/6150 chipset)
Athlon X2 4400+
Patriot PDC2G3200LLK

The Antec NeoHE 550 fails to power up when connected
to the MSI K8NGM2-FID motherboard. But an Enermax
EG701AX-VE-SFMA Noisetaker works just find.

I even tried the Antec NeoHE 550 on an ASUS motherboard.
ASUS motherboard powers up but fails to POST (no beeps).

I'd stay away from the NeoHE series until Antec guarantees
that this problem is really fixed.

I just purchased a P150 case at Anitec in Vancouver. Unfortunately, the Neo HE gives only momentary power to my system. The system fans spin up and immediately shut down. The motherboard LED remains lit.

Neo HE430 w/ SN S05110047668, included in P150 case
Asus A7V880 motherboard Rev 1.02 and Bios 1010.004
Sempron 3000+ (Socket A), 1GB PC3200 RAM
Asus Geforce 6200 video card

I didn't expect it to run, but I thought I would try. The system works fine with a SeaSonic S12-380, Super Tornado 350, and SS-300FS.

The A7V880 has a 20-pin power supply connection only. Does the Neo HE absolutely require a ATX12V 2.01 or better motherboard? Will getting a Socket A board with a 4-pin P4 connection solve the problem?
