hr-05 on k8ngm2-fid?

Post by bogus » Wed Jul 05, 2006 6:53 pm

Any one know if the Thermalright HR-05 would fit on the MSI k8ngm2-fid?

My msi is in the silverstone tj08 case. After I've closed the side intake, the temp of the IC on the HDD's pcb dropped from 48C to 42C :) However, the HS on the NB went from 57C to 65C! :( That made me think about replacing the stock NB hs with the HR-05.

I doubt it'll fit without problems. The HR-05-SLI seems possible, but probably at an odd angle. The MSI K8NGM2-FID 's allowable L x W dimension for the NB HS is just too small.

Edit: The HR-05-SLI may not fit too, if it uses the same mounting mechanism as the HR-05. This is because the K8NGM2-FID 's mounting holes are closer to each other than other boards. Not sure whether the shorter piece works.

Its page is up now.
Thermalright HR-05-SLI

The base should fit, probably at a very slight angle (unless you round the corners to shave off 2-3mm of diagonal length :|). But I think you gotta use a custom mounting mechanism, as the stock parts may not work.

Damn! Thermalright sales didn't get back to me and Tech guys just said "soon"!
If it's the same price (approx) as the std HR-05 then I'm up for one :D

What's wrong with running at 65C? I built a system with this board for my dad a few months back, and it runs solid at 73C.

On my fid I recently installed a zalman nb47 (very tight-mounted, nbf47 was way to big).
I did not care that much about the temp of the 6150 chip
but about the capacitors next to it as they got very hot either.

With the zalman cooler gpu und capacitor temps dropped considerably.

Would mounting the Zalman ZM-NB47J this way be safe (and efficient)? Unequal pressure, core fissure, etc.

has anyone been able to find a US dealer that will sell the HR-05 SLI? I'd love to ditch my current cooler, but the placement of the NB chip with respect to the PCIe x16 slot on my mb is...well, have a look:

Image

note the position of the NB chip. it's not directly underneath with the stock HSF, but having replaced it with a more standard model (stock fan died, bit of an emergency), i find that the pcb of my video card sits squarely on top of the fan housing. doesn't impede the cooler any, but clearly no room for an oversize cooler, especially with the oversize passive heatsink on my video card

any help would be greatly appreciated

UPDATE: Due out within the week at US$26.95 RRP, which should equate to US$19.95 over the counter. Mmmmm

As a recent user of the HR-05, I have to make this point: it certainly is a great chipset cooler, but you have to provide it with some cool airflow for best performance.
I have it installed on my aging Asus A8N-SLI Dlx, and there is a 7900 GTX installed in the lower PCI-E slot (it wouldn't fit in the upper). A thermal probe touches the HR-05.
Right now the HR-05 is about 45C, in a hot room (I'm wearing only underware), but when playing Oblivion it gets hotter, since hot air from the 7900 GTX reaches it.
So I have to increase the rpm of my case fans when gaming. If I had the SLI version, I could have installed the 7900 GTX in the upper slot and wouldn't worry about HR-05 temps.

Looks good! I can't see any reason for it to cause problems either, the mounts are well positioned and the NB47 isn't exactly heavy is it ?
Cheers for the pics, let us know the temp info when you can please.

I hope they end up only $1 more than the non-SLI version as they should be!
I've got feelers out over here for one :D

EDIT: I found a US supplier with them at the same price as the normal HR-05. :P

Newegg has the HR-05-SLI in stock now, for 19.5$. Too late for my current setup anyway. And my new setup is unlikely to allow a chipset cooler change.

And for those in Australia, PC Case Gear now has the HR-05-SLI in stock for $46 ($14 more than the standard HR-05). URL can be found here.

PC Case Gear are profiteering as usual! I've already sent an email to check it isn't a misprint
I think I'll wait for a local supplier (who sells the HR-05 at AU$27) to get it in at the correct price difference: AU$3 at most based on US$ RRP to AU$ conversion...

As long as the GST is reasonable that's not too bad.
Now then- anybody know where in the UK sells these?
I cant believe they've made it to Australia before the UK (no offence, but it is really far away :) ), but somehow there's no-body selling them here, according to google anyway. Any ideas?
