Thermalright Ultra 120 won't make good contact.

Post by fyleow » Thu Aug 31, 2006 2:09 pm

I purchased a Thermalright 120 to replace my SI-120 and I'm getting ridiculously high temperatures. My E6300 at stock speeds and voltage idles at 65C according to Core Temp. When I start dual priming it jumps quickly to over 80C. The Ultra wasn't even warm to the touch. I swapped the heatsink back to the SI-120 and my idle temps were under 50C. Load temps were in the mid 60C.

I tried googling to see if anybody else had problems but I didn't find anything. Is there a trick to mounting this thing?

I remember reading similar things, but I can't recall where I saw it. NewEgg perhaps?

Yep, that's where I saw it... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Custratin ... 6835109125

Thanks for digging up some info for me. Doesn't look like there's a solution posted in that thread :(

I'm going to call Thermalright tomorrow for an RMA. I have the same wiggle problem described in the Newegg comments so I went to Lowe's and bought some plastic washers. It fixed the wiggle but the temps were the same.

Too bad no reviewer caught this, but I guess the review samples are hand picked anyway.

I'll let you know how Thermalright handles this.

This sounds like a serious and widespread problem. I'm going to avoid this heatsink for now.

Well, this is not something unusual for thermalright. XP-120 was plagued by the same problem - curved base not making contact with the CPU. IMO given the extent of the problem along with astronomical prices thermalright charges for its heatsinks, this is simply unacceptable.

Still no word from Thermalright about a possible RMA...

OMG I hope I don't get this problem :x I just ordered an Ultra-120 as well and I have an E6400!

So was your problem with the Ultra-120 was because the surface just wasn't flat because of a QC problem? or are they all not flat enough to touch 775 Stockets? o.O

mate if the problem is taunting you replace it with the Scythe Infinity. I know that the Infitity is supposed to be a little less efficient than the Ninja and the Ultra120 but dude I have the iNifity on my 6600 and the sucker idles at 32c (I am in a hot part of austrlaia so the ambient here is pretty warm too) and the thing has never hit more than 46c under load.

I chucked a Nexus 120cm low speed fan on the right hand side of it and mounted the heatsink vertically.

I think the problem does not affect every Ultra 120. Some Newegg reviews mention the same problem and after an RMA it was fixed. I have sent in my Ultra for an RMA a few weeks ago but they are currently out of stock.

They told me the wait could be as long as until the end of October. :(

O.O You have to wait that LONG?! ZOMG!

I'm going to see if I can cancel my order for the Ultra-120. Going to search around Toronto for a local retailer (probably downtown ughhh damn parking) for a Ninja Scythe.

The Newegg ETA is October 16th so I don't expect to get the heatsink anytime soon.

I'm really disappointed with how Thermalright handled this situation. I was never told the replacement would take 2 months to get to me. If Thermalright informed me of the long wait time I would have returned the Ultra and purchased a Scythe Infinity instead.

I bought the Ultra 120 because it was cheaper at the time and the Ninja wasn't available. Now the Infinity's price has dropped and is cheaper if you consider that it includes a fan and AM2 adapter. The Ninja is also going to be available soon and it's cheaper.

This is definitely the last Thermalright product I'm buying.
