Wow, I just might get one now, whats the new mounting system like then? Looks like you dont have to remove the Mboard for 939! Sweet!
Thanks.

EDIT yeah, You dont have to remove the Mboard! Hmm, shall I get one to replace my Zalman 9500? :).

The SPCR review shows the Ninja (with a Nexus 120mm fan) having +/- the same performance as the 9500, both @ 12V. However the Ninja won that hands down noise-wise.

Well my Zalman 9500 is at 5V, if I get a Ninja shall I run it passive on my AMD 3800+ Venice at stock?

If not a D12 SL Yate Loon will cool it at 5V. Is there a piont?

Is it worth getting it?

lol Thanks.

Hello,

It probably could cool it "passively" -- it works on my X2 4200+...

I wonder if the "old" weight included that steel backplate? That might explain some/most of the weight decrease?

Probably.
I'm not sure about the fan though... It could be just a new sticker on its hub :?

So that's why I can't find any ninja in stock in any store I look. Seems all stores got rid of the old ninja or scythe stopped shipping the old version since they are releasing another revision.

Anybody knows what's different compared to 1000 besides weight? Does it have more fins? And how did they manage to reduce weight so much?

Well I know the Ninja didn't weigh 815g alone. So it sounds like to me nothing has changed on the heatsink. 815g - 640g= 175g(a typical 120mm fan weight).

If you look on Scythe's site, for the Ninja only, they list it as 665g:
http://scythe-usa.com/product/cpu/001/index.html
And on the Ninja Plus page they show the weight as 815g:
http://scythe-usa.com/product/cpu/006/scnj1000p.html
So, they're including the weight of the fan in the Ninja Plus. As for the 25g difference between heatsinks, could be the result of the different mounting scheme.

But, the new mounting system for 939 uses the stock backplate, and 815 is way over the reccomended allowance?

Thanks.

I doubt it would have any problem. The original Ninja had no backplate for 478. And the strength of theh clip is enough to bend the 939 retention module. But nothing has happened. Or they paid the inquirer to seal all news.

Finally! Too bad though that it will take so long. As I commented elsewhere, I've run into a few sites that list Sept. 26th as their new Ninja in-stock date (or by the 30th).

Now I have to wait even longer to build my new system, sigh...

Does anybody know whether it'll fit on an ASRock ALiveNF4G-DVI (AM2)?

Thanks

Yes it will, but check the height of the heatsink on the board, it might hit the Ninja.

Thanks.

Is the mounting system for LGA775 different on this new Ninja Rev B than the existing one? I'm about to switch to Conroe, and I still have the Ninja I used on my S939 system and the X-bracket for LGA775 that came with it.

FWIW, it appears they have updated the product page to mention not only the weight of the Rev B heatsink (640g) but also the fan (130g). Presumably neither figure includes weight for the mounting bracket and fan attachment bars. Based on a 40g WAG for those the total would come to 810g.

I think I read that 450g is the maximum weight Intel recommends for a socket 775 HSF, so that sounds way overweight and the fact that it is tall wouldn't help. Perhaps that 450g figure takes into account the shock/vibration that OEM systems could see during shipping and thus if you are very gentle when moving the system around you'd be OK? Has anyone tried to check for flex after mounting a Ninja to a MB?

Yes, it is Ryan. They have seemed to standardize the installation methods. You simply screw in the appropriate bracket for your processor and then install the HS onto the stock motherboard.

OK, does anyone know a webstore inside EU where I could buy this? Even more preferable would be one in Finland, but I doubt that there is one, yet - at least none of my usual shopping places have this cooler available.

At www.pc-cooling.de you can find it for 40 euros. Don't know about shipping though...

I got one the new Ninja's... but can't directly compare to the old one as i didnt have an original ninja. The blades are slightly flimsy - they bend easy which i dont remember reading in any reviews. Also the 120mm fan i got has a slight "tick" sound which at full speed makes it noiser than my Nexus 120mm - but i could have just been unlucky.

Personally i dislike the standard 775 mounting system; i'd prefer a backplate with screws over cheapy plastic knobs. But that's me. Installation was easy; just install your RAM before mounting the fan (nothings changed there)

Performance is brilliant though. My initial E6600 @ stock speeds temps;
Passively cooled: 55'c (idle)
With 120mm fan @ 720RPM: 33'c (idle)
My old Hyper48 Heatsink w/ 92mm fan: 36'c (idle)

Happy to answer any questions you guys have.

Hello,

The "old" Ninja's fins are easily bent, as well. I don't think that very much, if anything, has changed above the copper base...

The only place in Toronto right has them on backorder. I need one of these badly lol. I like the fact that we don't have to pull out our MBs anymore, I just hope it's secure! For Toronto people, you can buy yours locally from www.bigfootcomputers.com , they're located at Jane and Dundas. Very ver fast west of town :? But oh well.

I just ordered one of these from jab-tech. Should arrive in around 2-3 days. I'm waiting for it to arrive since I don't want to have to clean gunk off my Conroe after taking off the stock Intel HSF.

Has anyone tried this HSF with the Abit AW9D-Max? Are the two compatible?

I have contacted Scythe and they have told me that the Socket 775 bracket may interfere with caps next to the cpu socket on the AW9D-Max. I find this bizarre as heaps of conroe boards have capacitors right up against the CPU socket in basically the exact same position (eg. Asus P5B Deluxe & P5WDH).

Any help would be much appreciated as deciding on components for this Conroe build is driving me nuts!

how loud is the fan that is supplied with the ninja plus? is it worth replacing with a different one, say a nexus? thanks.

EDIT: after getting and installing it, i can definitely live with the included fan. i use speedfan to set it to 60% and i can't hear it. the rear tri-cool of my antec solo masks it.

I just got the new Ninja. However, it seems that I have a trouble: the "quick" installing system doesn't seem to be easy, at all. I've now spent two hours trying to get both sides of the cooler to stick at the same time, with no avail with my AMD 939 board. Is there some simple trick to it that I'm too stupid to see, does it require more physical power than I dare to invest with delicate components inches away, or is there something wrong with my board? It doesn't at least seem to be bent, in any way...

Hallois

Did you figure out if it will fit?

Or anyone else have any views on the matter?

..awaiting AW9D-MAX for my new build now, so need to decide on what HS to order. And I'd really like a scythe ninja :)

As an FYI: The Ninja Rev. B will fit on a Gigabyte GS-M55plus-S3G motherboard (AM2), but will block the first memory slot. So, you're limited to running only 2 sticks of RAM if you want dual channel. It will also press on some of the rear capacitors around the CPU socket, but not hard enough to worry about it.
