Making a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter ??

Hiya

l've got hold of a 2.5" drive which l'd like to try in my machine.. l know that l can buy an adapter but would it be possible to make one ? l've got plenty of 3.5" ribbons and various other cables..

lf someone could point me in the right direction please

Yikes.

Yes, in theory you could just make one. , the pin-outs are compatibile. But you're talking making 80 perfect solder connections on something like 36 gauge wire to have it work properly.

Personally, I'd rather spend the $1.99 to buy one instead of spending half a day trying to make one.

I found that website looking for a way to connect a laptop CD-ROM drive on a regular desktop computer through IDE (The project being a DIY and cheap PC in the very same box that the mainboard came in).

As you can see on that page, the main problem is about the differing size of the connectors, because apart from the power cable being integrated they are very similar, as they share pins 1 to 40 out of the total 44 pins.

Those kind of adapters are more around 10$ apiece in Europe, but I would advise you to do as suggested by Rusty and just buy it...unless you got a really cheap laptop drive that you don't care to crash practicing your soldering abilities.

EDIT: and don't even bother to ask me what's the difference between 5V motor and 5V logic...I have absolutely no idea

I agree with Rusty, I would just buy one.
